Purple Bike Gets TW-6G Cams
« on: May 01, 2009, 09:22:49 PM »

Since I was going to be laid up for awhile after knee surgery, I had my future son-in-law take my Purple Bike to Rod to get a set of Bob Wood's TW-6G cams, S&S gears, SE Billet plate, new oil pump, SE adjustable pushrods, and a set of ceramic coated Vance and Hines Dresser Duals installed.  Spoke with Rod today.  It appears the Road King started sumping on the dyno.  Whopping 46 HP.  Teardown indicated a deformed o-ring.  Gonna go check it out tomorrow.  No big deal.  Crap happens.  It'll be great to get it back home once everything is done.  Still haven't decided what to do about the carburetor, so may just leave the stock installed, rejet, and see how she does on the dyno.  Not sure sinking the $$ into a Wood Rebel or Super King.....or even blueprinting the stock carb.....will yield a substantial performance increase, since the engine is going to remain 88cid with stock heads.  Those sure are some nice carbs tho.  Bob makes great stuff.  Really diggin' his TW-408G cams in my Green Bike.  Not really looking for huge performance increase in the Purple Bike.  It was at 70/81 before this upgrade.  It was a reliability upgrade more than anything.  Having been through a tensioner failure before, I wanted to get those chains and tensioners out of there before anything bad happened.  I'll get a look at them tomorrow and see how they've held up for 14K miles.

For an 88"er the Mikuni 42 is a GREAT carb. Much less than Wood's and performs just fine.

Heard that elsewhere, Jim.  Rod hates 'em.  Calls 'em "slapper carbs" because of a slapping sound he says they make.  I've seen 'em, and completely understand they have a great reputation, but they sure do look different compared to CV carbs.  I've also heard contradicting tales about being both easy and difficult to set up.  Bottom line:  I have zero experience with them, but I can hold my own with a CV.  Rod isn't a fan of them either.  Not saying I don't want to learn about them.  I'm always looking to learn something new about my machines, and would happily welcome the opportunity, but the difficulty comes when the only person you trust with your machines within a 100 miles radius doesn't like 'em.....there isn't much hope for learning them.  I know Dennis likes 'em, but he lives at the other end of the state.  And I certainly don't want to teach myself out of a book.  The original plan for the cam upgrade on the Purple Bike was for me to do the work with Rod teaching me, but work (new gig), school, knee surgery, and family health issues quashed that wish.  I guess when I finally give up this professional stuff, I need to go MMI and learn........if for no other reason than to do something I love during my retirement.

So.....what is this "slapping" Rod is talking about?

It figures that no sooner does my orthopod clear me to ride that the rain comes.  Hopped in the ton truck and went down to Hanceville today to check on the Purple Bike.  When I arrived, Rod had her on the dyno.  Final numbers are 77/99.  Quite pleased with those numbers for the small upgrade.  Since I kept the fishtails, but changed out the headers to duals, Rod believes HP number would go up if I went with freer flowing mufflers, but TQ number would go then go down.  We all know TQ is what we feel, so the Purple Bike will keep the fishtails.  She runs great!  It wasn't raining down south, so I took her out for a little putt.  18 TQ points is readily noticable and quite alot of fun for a TC88A.
Left the bike down there so he could install an HPI oil filter adapter like the one on the Green Bike, a JAGG six row oil cooler, and change out the stock fender bumpers for V logo fender bumpers.  Next weekend, if the weather cooperates, I'll ride the Green Bike down there, so Rod can install a second JAGG six row oil cooler.  Really concerned about heat with the new engine in the Green Bike and would like to keep it lower than 230.  I'll ride the Purple Bike home and get it ready for Ribfest.
Two pictures.  First is the gutted oil pump removed from the Purple Bike.  Not too bad.  Hardly any scoring, and what is there can likely be explained by the second picture. Runout was .001".  Those gears and the dual exhaust have given the motorcycle a completely different sound and personality.  I'm really diggin' it.

The slide rattles at idle, it is a distinct sound that all Mik's make.

Thanks, Gents.  Really looking forward to getting the Purple Bike home.  I'm absolutely smitten with that machine.  Chip, I'm sure you know how I feel, since you own an 03 FLHTC in which you take great pride.  Dare I say it?  My FLHR rivals my FLHTCUSE for favoritism.
Weather is supposed to be crappy all week until Friday, so we'll see how it goes.  I'd dearly love to start riding to work again.  Really do need to get the Green Bike out and see how she runs now that it's warmer.  Whatever happens, she's getting an additional oil cooler.
