You got to do what you feel is best for you. For me, I had my first heart surgery 17 years ago and have been on blood thinners ever since then. At first I was very careful, watched my diet and lived right; bored the hell out of me and I went back to my evil ways for the last 16 years. It did turn me into a much more mature conservative rider and I do wear protective layers, even in 100 degree summer heat I wear armored mesh and gloves. Also I wear 99% of the time a flip or full face, only rarely in above 90 degree heat and going short ride to a bike night will I wear a 1/2 helmet. Recently I've started wearing mesh riding pants with armor instead of jeans, I look like a BMW rider and take some abuse but for the extra protection and airflow, it is worth it. Oh and by the way, your bar bill just got cut by 90%, before blood thinners I could drink beer all day and Jack D well into the night and argue with a stump about how  sober I was. After blood thinners, 2 drinks not only have I hit my limit but I know I am drunk and readily admit it. So never go past 2 beers or drinks and get on your bike. That is a rule I never ever break.

Of course I might be the right person to give any advice since I am doing the race school at Barber next week on my sport bike. That reminds me, I need to get one of those medical bracelets mentioned above. :o

Thus endeth the lesson........as Hubbard so aptly puts it.

I have two friends, one had a bio-valve put in, and now he truly a 'hog'. He's still riding, and has gone back to an occasional drink and cigar, but he does make everyone aware of his blood thinners and wears the med-alert bracelet, etc. as a precaution. His take was life was meant to live and enjoy so why worry about what 'might happen', you can't control that at all. Other guy had an artificial valve and defib/pacemaker put in and he's now on a trike, but still enjoying an occasional ride. Who says trikes are any safer than two wheels anyway?  :nixweiss:

You must do what you good conscience and family agree to, but it's primarliy your decision alone to make. Wish you the best in that regard.

Blood thinners for the past 15 years. January 19th went down hard. Broke shoulder blade, collar bone, nine ribs and shattered my helmet. Thinned blood was never an issue during my week in ICU and 3 weeks in the hospital. Tomorrow see my new 09 FLTRiSE3 for the first time. Looking forward to starting over again. Good luck.

Mostly a long-time lurker here, but after reading the replies I am proud to be considered a member.  This is one special and supportive group...   I hope they must pry my dead fingers off my hand grips the day I go...   Each night I lay down to sleep, no matter what troubles I face, I can focus my thoughts on my bike or riding and crowd out worrisome issues.  I know they won't go away, but at least I can temporarily replace them in those quiet moments before I go to sleep.  Someone said it here before - "Riding a motorcycle is my mental health "drug" of choice".  Drugs have side effects and most come with warning labels.  We take these drugs knowing the side effects because the net benefits mosly out way the bad effects...   I know my motorcycle riding "drug" has powerful and dangerous side effects, but for me so does not riding...   Gather all the input and feedback you can to make your best or "least-worst" choice...  It will be the right one...

fxdsebeloved,

They also put many people with high blood pressure on blood thinners.  So there is a VERY large group of people out there riding that are taking thinners.  Just to further beat a dead horse, wear a bracelet, make sure you're monitoring the thinner levels to get the minimum needed and ride safe.  Just ride! :beatdeadhorse:

Remember, too much sex can also give you a heart attack.  Are you giving that up???????
