Oxygen Sensor removal tool
« on: May 12, 2009, 08:55:03 AM »

I am getting ready to change out my cat head pipe assembly in favor of a non-cat header. The HD service manual says you need a O2 sensor socket (HD-48262) to remove the sensors. The service manual shows a picture of the socket which has a cut out to accomodate the wires coming out of the back of the sensor. For those of you who have changed your own exhaust header, did you purchase this special HD socket to remove the sensors? If not, then what did you use to remove and reinstall the O2 sensors on your new head pipe? Thanks

When you disconnect the header pipe you can use a standard open ended wrench to remove and install the 02 sensor on the front cylinder. Make sure to disconnect the 02 sensor from the wiring harness first( and reconnect it last)- (from the sensor, follow the wiring until you find the m/f connector and un plug it)- another thing to do is place some rags or old towels on the engine cases to keep the exhaust header from dropping and scratching your painted surfaces.

Good luck

Recommend running a tap through the new pipe before installing the 02 Sensors.  Just to clean out the threads.  I didn't it ended up costing me more in the long run.

And HD is selling a O2 sensor socket for almost $36 on their website as part number 94136-09. Even more amazing is that Zanotti is selling the same socket on their website for $41 plus something like $20 shipping. Zanotti told me they also sell an identical tool made by Jim's Tool (same guys who make the 131 motor) for just about the same price plus the same shipping. It surprised me that Zanotti was charging more for the same product than HD had on their own website. What's that about? I thought Zanotti was the best place to buy discounted HD parts? :-\
