I know how you feel.   :2vrolijk_21:  Did your surgeon mention anything about the possibility of one failing joint, and resultant compensation, leading to degeneration of other joints upstream?  I got that lecture from both my surgeon, my physical therapist, and my family doc.   I got the left knee fixed only because it was a safety issue.  Had it not been for that, I would have probably let it go......but doing so would have lead to my left hip degenerating.  So that got my attention.  I remember very well what you went through with your THR, and I don't want any part of that.  I see people in physical therapy every time I go there who have had THR, and most have also had some sort of knee problem....with the majority having undergone TKR.  I've had a pretty good awakening over the past few months.
Those cortisone injections SUCK when you get them.....especially in the knee.  My orthopod sunk that needle into my knee to the hilt.  It hurt like crazy, but was over quickly and almost instantaneously I felt SO much better.  Gary, it may be worth your while to just hunker down and get the needle.  You'll never know unless you try, and if it works, so much the better.  Just had one yesterday, and it doesn't burn anymore.  The only thing about it is........it is still healing from the surgery, so it would be very easy for me to mess it up again.  Same might happen in your case and you could screw it up worse than it is.
But the big thing is......might be a good idea to get that knee fixed.  Would hate to see you endure another THR, which might be prevented by fixing your bad knee. JMHO.  I'm no newb to ortho injuries and repair by any means, but if fixing something small can prevent something worse from happening, then it might be worth your while to look into it.
He didn't mention it, but I know well of it... when I was going through PT after my THR I found so many things that my body was doing to compensate the bad hip. I definitely don't want to have to go through that again. :nervous: The needle doesn't bother me as I sat and watched them insert it into the hip joint and do the injection. In my sick mind I enjoy seeing stuff like that (I stayed awake during both of my prior 'scopes on the knee). The thing that concerns me most is yes the cortisone will help, but at the same time it is helping it also deteriorates the joint. It's been 20 years since I had the knee 'scoped for the torn meniscus and at that time I was classified at 10% permanant disability and told that I would eventually have arthritis in the knee. I was expecting this, but the overnight onset is what really baffles me and has me believing that something other then just arthritis is going on. :nixweiss: Trust me due to what I've learned about compensation I'm not going to let this go on for years, more less months. If something doesn't change within the next few weeks I'm having it 'scoped so the surgeon can at least get a "birds eye view" on what is going on inside there and clean up what needs to be. :2vrolijk_21:

......

Three weeks ago when I had my episode I thought I was going to need to go under the knife again, but today ortho just told me to keep doing what I'm doing since it's getting better. Took x-rays and there is little to no cartilage left, we can see bone spurs, and while manipulating my leg/knee you can feel it going over the bad places. :'( Anyway for now I'm just going to continue my present course as it's not giving me any pain other then getting stiff at times (arthritis). If it gets to be really bad he told me just give him a call and within a week he'd have me in surgery and clean it up if needed.......

Well that "continue my present course" didn't last long. Had surgeon go in and do surgery (arthroscopic) today and clean up the joint and what a difference!!! Knee continued to get better, but never would get what I would consider well so I opted for the surgery. So far so good, quick procedure of which I choose to have a block so I could stay awake to watch. Went in this morning at 0630, procedure started about 0745, and home before 1200. Currently icing, elevating, and taking Percocets. ;D Left hospital w/o the use of crutches or cane, Dr. told me to take it easy for a couple of days no riding bike, of which I asked him how long and he replied "this weekend" (wow!! was I glad to hear that was as long as he wanted me to stay off). Currently the knee is feeling really good, but I'm waiting until a day or so after the anesthetics that were given locally to the joint for the procedure wear off and I get off the Percocets to decide for sure.

Gary, Although my surgery was done under general anesthesia, and I was given a script of Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab......whatever brand you want to call it), I did pretty well during the first 10 or so days post-op.  Then, as my surgeon said, the "healing" kicked in.  WOW.  Definitely not pleasant.  I'm riding again, but not far.  Trailered up to CHL for the Ribfest.  Took Stef out on the Purple Bike yesterday for the group ride.  Lasted for half the day.  Even gutted out "just one more" nice romp across Wolf Pen Gap.  I ain't ridin' nowhere today. One month post-op today.  Swelling is barely noticeable, but the area where the Plica band was removed feels like there's shards of glass in there.  Other than that, the knee is fully functional.  No more locking.  Might want to save some of those Percs for a week or so down the road when it starts really healing.  PT helped alot.

I'm being hopefully/cautiously optimistic. Since this was a maintenance (cleaning/shaving some of the ragged ends of the cartilage) operation more then it was a repair I'm hoping things will go smoothly. The fact that surgeon didn't order any PT afterwards and only told me to take it easy for a few days I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I'm really wanting to make it up to DC next Saturday for Rolling Thunder. :-\
