Burning Smell When Hot
« on: May 22, 2009, 09:51:41 PM »

Guys, I have a 2007 CVO Dyna with about 4,500 miles.

Last winter, I took it in for the gasket "recall" and the ACR changes.  Since then, it has had a nasty smell when hot.   I can really smell it at idle, like when waiting for a light.

It smells kind of like unburned gas, but not really.   I've had it back into the dealer and originally they said it was oil on the cylinders that needed to burn off.   Now they are saying its unburned gas from a Power Commander that is too rich (mine isn't too rich, plus I leaned the hell out of it to make sure and the smell is still there).

It's coming from the right side of the bike, near the air filter.    I have heard some talk of burnt ACR wires.   Where are these?   How can I check them?

Thanks, C.

Did they happen to change the oil for you after the work?  I notice a marked difference in the odor coming out of the breathers depending on what kind of oil is in it.  And that would be at the air cleaner.

This is a burning smell that is very noticeable.

Has anyone heard of this happening with the ACR wires?

The ACR wires are under the gas tank and they hook to the ACR's on top of the cylinder heads. It is a pain to check.

Same here, not strong enough to smell outdoors or while driving but when I park it in my garage it smells like hot oil/plastic.

Yup...I've got that smell on my bike too.  I notice it mainly when I'm stopped, but even at low speeds, it's strong enough to smell sometimes.
