12 Point Bolts ~ need help
« on: May 28, 2009, 01:32:39 AM »

A very good friend told me, women like to collect pocket books and shoes. He then advised me to be very careful with the new substance I was about to try as it had similar addictive tendencies.   Well about two weeks ago I bought my first 12 point chromed bolts. I've learned quite a bit reading here and looking at the manufacture's websites. The first thing I learned was that my very good friend may have one of these bolts loose in his head! See, he decided to go the l-o-n-g route and buy his unpolished. That boy's got as much sense as a nine eyed cattail. Then it dawned on me for the reasoning...some quite time in the shop away from a significant other and a few felines. Well, I don't have the time and patience or, more importantly, the desire to be liberated so I'd like to go the easy route and buy a pre packaged kit and a few odd pieces that I know I need (for safety reasons, of course). I have found two companies that fit the bill. Alloyboltz and Diamond Engineering. Both sell pretty much the same product I'm looking for: 12 Point show grade bolts in various sizes. I need some feed back on the two companies. Alloyboltz sells on eBay (thanks to my other friend 2LN's advice) and a nice discount. My dear friend with the lovely wife and furry felines has put his engineering background to good use and provided an excellent spread sheet that if you look at the bottom tabs, you will see all the cross referencing done! Mighty fine piece of handywork!
The Alloyboltz kit on eBay is about $190. That's upto '06. I'm sure the 110" will add some more.
In conclusion, Diamond Engineering or Alloyboltz?

I like Chuck's spreadsheet.  A lot.  One of my favorite files saved :2vrolijk_21: .

AJ, if memory serves Chuck had trouble finding shock bolts and a few other pieces when doing his.  Not stainless but chrome; but if you can live with that here's a place that should be able to finish out what Alloyboltz might not:

http://www.afchromebolts.com/catalog_12point.html

Again for chrome rather than stainless here's one I like even better.  This place will assemble assortments too:

I've bought several kits over the years from Alloyboltz when wanting stainless stuff.  Always fine to work with and provided exactly what they described.

Be careful my feline-free friend as there is no 12-step program for a 12-point addiction. ;)

When I saw the title of this thread I assumed we were talkin' about some new fangled version of ink blots and mental health. (12 Point Blots ~ need help):confused5:  You can imagine how disappointed I was to find it was just another motorcycle related thread.  ::)

I don't know if anyone has ever mentioned this in the past, but for those who are very anal about little rust spots on their bolt heads the stainless product is definitely the way to go.  Where chrome plating will easily chip off the sharp edges when wrenches are applied, the stainless material is very forgiving and will stay looking good much longer.  Just thought I'd throw that out.  Now, let's get back to that mental health issue.

I've had Alloyboltz in both my bikes.  The people are great to work with and supplied the odd/different bolt with ease.  12pt the only way to go.

Well my new J&S jack just arrived today. At least I'm hoping that's what in the big box that Linda has gotten me for my upcoming birthday. So now it's time to finish my 'wish' list for Alloyboltz. I have a bunch of the Hot Toppers to still replace and will most likely leave many of them on and do the 12 points sporadically.
