I believe the clue is in the name itself.  "Torx" allows you to apply more torque without stripping the head compared to flat, phillips, or allen heads.

Thanks for the info, Smuuth!

Is not the "stupidest" question is the one not asked?

Yup.  Think of a slot head.  When you turn it all of the pressure is on one small part of the slot.  A Phillips head has four contact points, a hex head has six.  The more places the tool contacts the device the less pressure each has to take.  And with slot, Phillips, hex, star, Torx, etc. they can sell you more tools.

Also harder for the torx to slip out and round the head like a phillips can and will

Actually, it seems strange, but that very action was one of the reasons the phillips screw type was invented.  It's called "camming out" and is purposely designed to prevent over-tightening.

I agree, the problem is not installing phillips as you can get proper torque.  The problem is loosening them after they have been in an engine case for a year or two.

I think they make a lot of money on those torx head bits,  I usually go through 2 or 3 bits just trying to loosen 1 bolt.
