Sticky Throttle
« on: July 06, 2009, 10:29:34 PM »

I have notice my throttle seems a little sticky for some reason. It does not want to release to idle.  Anyone else have this problem? I have not done anything to the bike that would cause this. It just feels tight when rollin it back and it is slow to go back to idle. Feels like it is too tight on the bar or something. I have about 4000 miles and this just showed up last weekend. The bike is stored inside climate controlled and is not subject to wet conditions. One rain event for appx 30 minutes over a month ago.

I noticed my throttle sticks a little too.  I forgot to mention it when I had 1000 mile service done last week.  When I roll on the throttle, it seems to stick when I go from closed to open.

It may be binding, see if you have some free play front to back, it should have a little. Easy fix, loosen master cylinder perch bolts and housing bolts and set a little free play.  Doc

I seem to remember a fairly large group of folks complaining about sticking throttle grips when the throttle-by-wire first came out.  You may want to try a site search for "sticking throttle" to find earlier threads.

The grips on the throttle-by-wire bikes still need to be serviced, even though there are no cables to be lubed and adjusted.  The grip needs to slide smoothly on the handlebar, and it also needs a slight amount of end play so it doesn't bind either on the end of handlebar (the sensor fits into the end of the bar, and engages teeth in the plastic sleeve of the grip at the outboard end), or where the grip enters the switch/brake lever housing.  Should have been checked and serviced at the 1k service, but I'll bet it gets blown off by many/most techs.
