Red Line Fluids -how much
« on: June 21, 2009, 05:39:15 PM »

Okay, I found the link to the race supply in Indiana that sells a package deal of red line fluids.  5 qts oil, 1 qt primary lube and 1 qt trans fluid.  But my memory from my last oil change says I used more than one quart in the primary, or maybe it was the transmission.  I threw out my old Touring model service manual when I got the 09 SERG so I can't find the capacities.  But don't I need more than a quart for the trans or primary?  The package deal only offers one qt each.

Hey thanks Berk for repeating what I wrote, and not answering the question.  I wonder how you can type when you can't read.

The Owner's Manual for my 2003 SERK was 32 oz. in the Primary.  Where's the 38 oz. coming from?

Did the 38 oz. start with the '09 bikes or in '07 with the 96" and 110"?

The larger amount began in 2006 on the Dyna, then across the board on the Big Twins in 2007.  I think it's actually 45 ounces dry (as in after complete disassembly), 38 ounces for a regular change.  Damned shame they couldn't leave it at the very convenient 32 ounce (1 quart) that the older bikes used.  I guess a person could fill some of those nonessential nooks and crannies in the primary with epoxy until the volume was reduced to 32 ounces again. ::)

 http://www.racerpartswholesale.com/category/Red_Line_Oil/?r=grlo&gclid=CMXF0vLcnpsCFR7yDAodoGO8qg

Red Line 20W50 Motorcycle Oil- Quart    $11.45

Red Line V-Twin Primary Case Oil- Quart         $11.45
Red Line MTL Manual Transmission Oil- Quart    $10.45

Red Line V-Twin Transmission Oil with Shockproof- Quart    $11.45
Red Line 75W250/75W Heavy Shockproof Gear Oil- Quarts    $9.99

Red Line Big Twin 20W50 PowerPack       $79.95

Looking for cooler operating temperatures, better shifting, less noise and less wear? Red Line's PowerPack includes our latest motor oil for motorcycles, V-Twin Transmission Oil with Shockproof, V-Twin Primary oil for the primary chain case, plus a bottle of Complete Fuel System Cleaner for Motorcycles.

This kit is suggested for with all Evos ('84-up) and includes 5 quarts of 20W50 Motorcycle Oil, 1 quart of V-Twin Transmission Oil with ShockProof, 1 quart of Primary Chain Case Oil, 1 bottle of Fuel Injection Cleaner for Motorcycles, a sticker kit, a Red Line Oil embroidered hat, and a versatile funnel

Shipping:  $8.85 plus $.50 per quart
---------------------

Considering that the folks with the '07 and later bikes will need more than one quart for the primary, this PowerPack thing may not be the best bet.  But, let's try a few variations and see what we come up with.

PowerPack plus 1 additional quart V-T Primary lube, $79.95 + 11.45 + 12.85 shipping = $104.25

5qt 20w50, 2qt V-T Primary lube, 1qt V-T Trans lube, $57.25 + 22.90 + 11.45 + 12.85 shipping = $104.45

5qt 20w50, 2qt MTL, 1qt Heavy Shockproof, $57.25 + 20.90 + 9.99 + 12.85 shipping = $100.99

Well, it looks like the old original versions come in a tad cheaper than the new V-Twin labeled stuff.  Surprise, surprise!

Of course, the first option with the PowerPack does give you a nifty funnel, a hat, and a bottle of injector cleaner for only $3.26 more than the cheapest option.  Might be OK for the first order, but how many funnels does one guy need?

BTW, the difference between the V-Twin specific products and the old standby's is actually less on this site than what you'll find on most other sites.  I've seen a $3.00 per quart difference elsewhere.

Going by the directions of visually inspecting for a full level while changing the primary on the Jiffy Stand (from my ownwers manual) 32 oz was a perfect fit, 38 oz would have been over filled. Same result three seperate fluid changes.
