wind from below
« on: May 04, 2009, 07:58:49 PM »

When im ridding casper i get alot of wind that shoots up between the gas tank and the fairing. this causes buggs to go up inside my helmet as well at all that wind blowing on the micophone. (I wear a 3/4 helmet). Does anyone know of any type of wind deflector that will help prevent this? I notice it with all 3 windshields that i use so I dont think it has to do with that.
Thanks,
Bruce

The above link will take you to the '09 SERG page, but that same part will work for your '08 CUSE. Looked at your avatar and thought you were asking about your SERG and missed that you were asking for your Casper. :-[

A black version of that piece used to come stock on Ultra's.  I was told that they eliminated it becasue it contrbuted to the heat issues.  I don't see how it could when you consider the lowers... But something to consider.

Ive checked out my bikes and have found that the 07 SERK has a chrome version, The 08 SEUC has none and the 09 SERG has the black version. I guess thats why i have a problems with the 08 SEUC, I will have to get one for it. Makes you wonder4 if they just throw parts on the cvo's just for fun or if its functionality.

This is the same issue I have, that little cup wind deflector does not make a difference.  The wind buffets so bad i actually quit riding my bike and ride the fatboy instead.  This thing drives me nuts!  Someone needs to develop a set of lower deflectors that fits under the signal light mounts.  I have 4 windshields and only the tallest helps slightly(ugly)

Correct - the wind issue is not helped by the deflector, and a friend is so upset by it that he's been working on deflectors that attach to the engine guard and sit above the lowers.

The re-curve windshield was no help. I found that  by removing the lower fairings helmet buffeting was cut way down.

I've heard some of those same stories, but in fact the old stock piece was eliminated long before the latest emission regs ran the engine temps up so high.  I tend to believe it was more of a cost savings for H-D.  I've been running one on my bike for about 4 years now with no negative impact.  It did help some of that draft up the front of the tank thing, but it isn't magic.  I personally believe we need a different design windscreen which puts some air flow up the inside of the screen to break up the low pressure area that forms there.  Several other manufacturer's have such designs, Honda and BMW come to mind, and when it's done right it really does reduce the inflow from the sides and bottom as well as the helmet buffeting from the air spilling off the top of the screen.  It's not something unknown to H-D, I had an accessory quarter fairing from the catalog on a Dyna years ago and it had that feature.

Oh well, for now the fork deflector seems to help, as do the fairing side deflectors.  Maybe when Willy G. retires we can get the batwing redesigned so a bunch of add-ons aren't required. ;)

It is only on the 08 and up.  It has something to do with the larger gas tank.  I really would like to see those lower deflectors you are talking about.

My 09 SG had a big updraft problem too... I installed the cup between the forks and the side wings on my fairing and use the 9 1/2 clearview shield with recurve. There is almost no breeze coming up now unless I throw my knees way out to the side or open the adjustable wings to direct air up at me. I think it's so calm now I could probably light a cigerette while flying down the freeway. cup and wings stopped 99% of the updraft on the Street Glide.

On the cup and heat deal the knowledgeable parts guy told me take it off at outside temps above 85-90. I just ran it 75 mph in 107 degree sun and motor never got over the 266 oil temp. Works good enough with it on, I'm leaving it there all summer... :huepfenjump3:

I have the chrome air flow deflector (half circle) on both bikes, '01 RKC has it for over 70k miles, '05 SE Ultra has for 46k miles, I leave it on at all times, have toured AZ and New Mexico in summer with no problems

I smoke a Cigar every time I ride my 08 SEUC. With the 12 " Clearview windscreen and my lowers removed when I bought the bike it is quite calm in my face location. I was going to install that lower baffle but I really don't need it. It's a Caddy on Two Wheels!!
