Has anyone else noticed any incosistancy in the paint on the saddle bag lids?
I have a Silver SERG and the paint looks blochey in certain light conditions. Haven't seen many others to compare mine to. I have a feeling that the dealership will say that is the nature of metallic paint. It doesn't look horrible but I notice it. It isn't like that on the tank or fairing.
If you have what I think you have, based on the description, it's what we called "mottle" in the auto paint business, and it's caused by the metallic or mica particles not being uniformly distributed in the paint film. It's not uncommon, but it shouldn't be considered normal either. It can be controlled through a combination of formulation changes to the paint and adjustments to the spray equipment and technique.
Based on my past experience with the MoCo concerning paint defects, I would say that if the mottle is obvious from 10 feet away they might replace the part. If it isn't obvious at that distance, they will tell you it's normal or it meets industry standards or some such stuff. I would tend to agree if we were talking about a $10k econobox paint job, but I think we have a right to expect more than meeting bare minimum standards when it comes to a paint job they pawn off as "custom" and charge 3 arms, 1 leg, and your left testicle for. Definitely file a claim with the dealer if it really bothers you, and be prepared to have to get the H-D rep involved as well. You may not win your case, but if you don't ask you definitely won't get anything.
