Fork oil change at 5000 miles?
« on: July 18, 2009, 10:24:32 AM »

When checking the HD website for my rear wheel recall I noticed it said I needed the fork oil changed at 5000 miles. The service manager looked at me like I was nuts when I asked him about it. Is this something new or something nobody ever does with this low mileage. I believe the next change was suggested at 80,000 miles. T.

No I just checked it again. It says I need to change the fork oil at 5000 miles and again 50,000 miles later. T.

Sure you Spyder.  It's called dealer service fee generation.

I've got one of those prepaid 10,000 mile service plans. Should I have them change it or not? I just looked on the card and that is not included so they would want to charge me for it no doubt. T.

Per the Service Check Up. Change fork oil at 5,000 miles; disassemble, lubricate and inspect every 50,000 miles.

I believe you folks will find that the 5000 mile entry is a mistake, kind of like much of the other "information" that gets posted on Harley's web site in things like model specifications.

Suggest you consult the actual maintenance schedule in the owner's manual and/or the shop manual.

BTW, what could have possibly changed in the forks to require this early fluid change?  Same old forks, same old fluid.  Maybe the MoCo figured out they've been forgetting to put oil in the forks lately and decided to add the requirement to the customer maintenance to save warranty expense.  I'm only partially joking here, I really wouldn't put it past them.

Just looked in my book and it says 50,000 miles. Not at 5000. T.

This issue has generated considerable discussion on other boards and I think it has come up here before as well.  The HD website info is erroneous.  I suspect it has something to do with the footnotes attached to the item that causes it to show up in service recommendations at all mileage intervals.

Never heard of the 5k, but I do know 50k is correct.

Used to be 25k then I believe in 06 they changed it to 50k.
