FullSac Conversion
« on: July 02, 2009, 09:23:57 PM »

I just did my second set of mufflers installing the FullSac baffles.  Both using the stock muffs from a '06 SEUC.  The first time I pulled the screens and packing out and installed new packing.  When I pulled the screens I measured them and they were 3" in diameter.  That allowed for roughly 1/2" of packing around them.  On this latest set I didn't replace the packing but in looking at the the screens they appear to me larger in diameter and thus looks like very little packing, or room for packing around them.  Has anyone else run across this?

Also I did try to pull one out and it didn't appear to want to come out so I didn't force the issue.  Anyone had the same issue?

I've got the 2" baffles this time and I love the sound but wouldn't mind toning it down just a tad.  I don't want to go the the 1.75" so has anyone done anything to quiet the FullSac muffs a little?  What would wrapping packing directly around the baffle do?

Sorry for all the questions but you never know if you don't ask.   :)

No answers for me?

I'd really like to know if anyone has tried wrapping the baffles like in many other aftermarket mufflers?

Dakota, ive tried about every modification to a muffler baffle that can be done looking for that elusive perfect sound,  more packing on a two" fullsac baffle IMHO changes the resonance and makes a flatter tone but it is not any quieter, I broke down and installed the 1.75 baffles, for my old ears they are perfect. the 2 inchers sound great around town but running X-way speeds, they start wearing on me after 100mi or so. extra packing makes a noticeable difference on closed end mufflers like supertrapps with tuneable discs, but with straight through mufflers like Reinhardts, Kerker,Cobra Etc its not really that noticeable, Fullsac Baffles are very similar to reinhardt baffles

Thanks dartman.

What's your opinion of changing the original packing that's already in these muffs? Do you think different packing affects the sound much? When I changed the packing on my first set I used this packing that I bought on eBay.

Dakota, That the packing I use, its dense, takes high temperatures, and last forever. its better IMHO then Moose packing or sport bike packing that costs 4 times as much.

dartman,  do you think the packing makes any difference in the sound/tone of the muffs?

Dakota<
I have the 1 3/4 Fulsacs.
I agree the sound is perfect for me.
Good tone in town, but cruising, not irritating, and can use all radios and hear just fine.
I have had many good comments about the sound!

I just had to try wrapping the 2" FullSac baffles.  I bought a 20"x38" piece of packing from this eBay site:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/20-x-38-MOTORCYCLE-EXHAUST-BAFFLE-PACKING-INSULATION_W0QQitemZ130317001037QQcmdZViewItemQQptZRace_Car_Parts?hash=item1e577fa14d&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1171

I cut the packing in half and wrapped it around each baffle.  Not tight, just tight enough so I could slide the baffle back into the muffler.  When I was done I went for a short ride in town and out on the highway.

Conclusion:  Not a significant change.  I believe it did tone it down at idle and at a constant cruise speed.  In fact i really like the sound at idle.  But I think when you got on the throttle it actually made it louder.  More of a "blatty" sound under acceleration.

Guess I'm going to have to get the 1.75 inchers.  I already have a guy that will swap with me so I'm in good shape there.  Maybe have to wrap the 1.75 inchers and see what the result is.

Don't think you will find that wrapping the 1 3/4's is necessary. Delivers a good all round sound without be ing offensive, and able to hear radio out of speakers

sawyerghost,
I had the 1.75" in my '06 SEUC that I sold.  Running these 2 inchers on a '03 SERK that I picked up.  I bought a set of '06 SEUC muffs from flyingwillie to put them in.

One more try with added packing.  I pulled the baffles and the packing out that I had put in the other day.  Didn't like the sound with the baffles wrapped.  Too 'blatty".  I cut a piece of the packing the proper size to insert and push up against the screen so it was one layer thick.  I could reach in with my hand and smooth most of it against the screen but had to use a short stick to get at the stuff further in.  Then I re-installed the baffles.  With the packing up against the screen that left an air space between the baffle and the pakcing.  The result was a real nice sound.  Can't say it's any quieter than without the added packing but I like it better.

the packing, or insulation, is just that. does not quiet anything down, what it does do is stopping the sound from radiating side to side and channels it to the rear. without the packing it sounded a little tinny, like rhineharts. with the insulation in good crisp sound note.
No Klaus, I do not have a sound bite on this
