Newbie Question on oil cooler for CVO Engines
« on: June 29, 2009, 04:26:49 PM »

Dear Gents:

Total newbie question, first Harley ever,  so of course big topic is that the bikes run very hot.  So, in several posts the topic of oil coolers has come up.  What do they do ?

Do they actually cool down the engine heat (oil temps).  I guess what i am asking is/are:

1)
what is an oil cooler or how does it work ?

2)
what is the recommended oil cooler for the 2007 SERK ?

3)
Is it worth it ?

The oil cooler is just like a small radiator, oil runs through it and the air moving over the fins removes heat.  Is it worth it?  Yes, I think so.  The main problem with it as designed is that it doesn't give a lot of cooling when you are stopped - which is when heat build-up is the worst.  It sits in a chrome housing down by the oil filter, and although there is a little bit of heat radiated off it air flow is needed to really do much.  It will cool things off more quickly when you do start moving.  There are better ways to cool the engine down, adding a little more fuel to richen the mixture, changing pipes to get rid of the heat-producing catalytic converter.

I changed the HD oil cooler and adapter with Jagg units--much better results!

A company named Jagg makes oil coolers and adapters to fit on the HD oil filter attachment port.  Their cooler unit allows the oil to flow more freely (they also have models with more rows of cooling tubes and fins) and their adapter reverses the path of the oil from the HD unit (by path I mean thru the filter then the cooler vs thru the cooler then the adapter) for better results.  Check out past articles in American Iron mag by Donnie Peterson for more details about oil cooling.  The Jagg adapter repositions the oil filter just enough to make it easier to remove the filter and with less spillage (more room to put rags under the old filter) when you change the oil.  I changed the cooler unit first and got 5 to 10 degree cooler readings, then changed the adapter and got another 15 to 20 degrees cooler.  I am using the 10 row horizontal cooler and will be adding a 6 row vertical attached to the down tube for better cooling yet

Look up Jagg Oil Coolers on internet.  You can buy thru Drag Specialties.

The Jagg adapter repositions the oil filter just enough to make it easier to remove the filter and with less spillage (more room to put rags under the old filter) when you change the oil.

That little tidbit about giving more room around the filter I'd not read before.  More room for a collection funnel or rags can only help.  Nothing works well or everytime the way it is.
