Is there such a thing as.....
« on: November 25, 2005, 06:06:00 PM »

A quiet 2-1 free flowing exhaust system for the dresser?

Everyone raves about the Thunderheader, or D&D, FatCat, but those are too loud for me. I'm looking to maximize my upcoming engine mods, and I don't want to go deaf. Right now I'm running FullSac mufflers, and this is as loud as I care to be.

Ironhorse,

It would be possible to build a truly free flowing but quiet muffler, but it would have to be much larger than the mufflers currently available.  With enough internal volume, you could make a muffler just as quiet as the stock mufflers but with much less restriction.  The problem is that they would look lousy and take up way too much space.  One example is the stock V-Rod exhaust, which is huge due to H-D's efforts to improve flow and stay within sound level restrictions.

There are other technologies out there, such as noise cancelling like that used in some headphones, but I've only seen automotive exhaust companies experimenting with that.  If you want the lower sound level for yourself, as opposed to your neighbors, you could always try some of the better quality accoustic ear plugs.  The good ones cut off sound above a certain level while still allowing you to hear normal conversations and the radio.

Jerry,

Thanks for the suggestion, but I already have custom made earplugs.
Some folks say the V&H ProPipe is not too bad if you close off holes in the baffles.
I've also read that the SuperTrapp SuperMeg with 14-16 discs and an end cap is pretty quiet too.

Anybody here running those?

Ironhorse give cycle shack a call they can make you something custom to suit the need / desire your trying to get out of it.   It may cost a bit more, but you will get what you want.

I am wondering if you were to weld up your stock pipe cross over and try your stock muffler on the bike.   With this you wont have a stepped pipe, but you would have a quieter pipe.  They say its about and 80/20 anyhow.  Maybe someone else on here has tried it and can say if its good, ok , fair, sucks dont waste your time :)

Its late too, so this second idea needs a sounding board.

Another idea not sure if fits or works is the V&H pro pipe or screaming eagle pipe with a kerker muffler.  They were pretty soft on my ears when I had just the slip ons and that was why they had to go :)

Not sure if you can find one but White Brothers made a 2 into 1 that was tuneable (used dics to tune)  it was fairly quiet and made good power.  had one on my 02 road king took it off before I sold the bike (its hanging on the wall in the shop).  The good part about a tunable muffler is you can build the motor any way you want and then tune the exhaust to the motor.  Gives you one more tool to work with.

I agree with ironhorse Supertrapps has a low level of noise with that muffled sound.
