Little Help on tire size and speed sensor
« on: September 08, 2009, 03:00:47 PM »

I am trying to figure out if the speed sensor is in the rear of my Deuce.  I am considering putting a lower profile tire on the bike a 180/55 - 17 instead of the OEM 180/60 -17?  Anybody know if this will throw off my speedo?

Can't find any other tires that are 180/60 -17 besides dunlops?

Thanks in advance for the help.

The "speed sensor" as you refer to it, is in the trans, not on the wheel. Changing tire size will result in you having to recalibrate the speedo. There are tools to accomplish that. I can't comment on your desired new tire size, but a higher "profile" tire is usually narrower than the lower profile size. So it'll prolly fit OK, as long as the O.D. doesn't grow much, causing it to hit the rear fender on bumps, wearing out your rear wiring mounted there.

Thanks Hoist it is a shorter tire so it should be OK.  Did not want to change the size but since I can not find any other tires besides the OEM at that size is why I ask.  Thanks.

Check your speed against a GPS unit. If it's close, I wouldn't even bother recalibrating the speedo. My speedo is off 3 MPH from my GPS. And I trust the GPS more than the speedo as far as actual speed measurement. ;)

a 180/55 should really be on a 5.5" rim, not the 4.5" thats stock...
