Stock hand grips
« on: October 08, 2009, 09:03:46 AM »

My stock throttle grip keeps falling off--I have been to several dealerships and nobody has them in stock, As I am currently on the road out of state, one of the dealerships glued it back on for me.  Within the next few days the throttle grip started sticking, stopped at another DS in another state and they took it apart and cleaned some of the glue out.  When I picked my scooter up they charged me for the labor. I asked them what was more dangerous, the grip sliding off or the throttle sticking.  There is supposed to be a problem as HD has had a lot of complaints but they do not call it a recall.

I had the problem with my throttle grip twisting and sliding off.  I kept a close eye on it, and continued to shove it back into place until my new one arrived.  I turned the throttle forward, like when you are setting the rear cylinder shut down, and then pushed it back on.  It's pretty dangerous.  The first time it happened, I caught it just as it was ready to come off the end of the bar.

I went through it for a couple of months and had to keep sliding it back into place sometimes 15 to 20 times a day.  As far as the rubber on the grips, mine doesn't appear to be breaking down, but it does have a faded like look to it where it gets scuffed from gloves, but I think that is fairly normal wear for that hard rubber type of material.  I don't know what yours looks like, so maybe we are talking about 2 different things.

I had the same problem with my '08, so it is obvious that this has been a problem for quite sometime...

What's up with that?

Since they replaced it a few months ago with a new new one, no problem.  So far.

This problem has happened repeatedly on my 07 FLHRSEI. I have had three hand grips replaced, and yesterday they "re-glued" the grip...Even though the bike had been "test rode" (right.....good rider huh) the throttle immediatley sticked in all positions and would not return unless manually forced back to idle...i have also been on road where this grip comes close to falling off...how they can not consider this a recall from a liability standpoint is beyond me, this is dangerous and induces a safety issue for the rider.  Worse yet, why can they not fix a loose handgrip problem from their engineering department?  The alternative to go to non-matching grips from the rest of the bike is ridiculous given the CVO image

nudels2u75, When did they start putting glue on the throttle side. I have had no had grip issues on my 09SEUC and I just changed the grips on my 95 Heritage. Of course I glued the left grip and let it sit for a day, but no way should they have glued the throttle side. That gets held on my the clamp and screws with a little blue locktite on them. I don't get it CAHDBIKER

We used to hold them on with a cheap old hair spray, sprayed into the grip slid it on, let it dry and they never moved again.

I had the problem with my throttle handle also and when I showed it to the shop, they told me immediately that it had to be replaced.  Score one for my shop finally.  I haven't had a problem since.

I believe he's talking about the outer grip to the inner plastic sleeve.  The throttle grips have a plastic inner sleeve that normally should never move at all within the outer grip.  In fact, you can't just buy the outer portion of the grip, they come with the plastic sleeve built in.  So if the grip is slipping, something wasn't made correctly from the git-go.  Gluing the grip onto the sleeve isn't the answer, the entire part should be replaced.
