Reactivate O2-sensors after mapping the Supertuner or SERT ?
« on: September 22, 2009, 03:10:52 PM »

Just talked with the technical master at my dealer who wants to put the supertuner on my bike .
But first he gets a new dyno ant there should come out a new software-version including a kind of " smart-setting" that he wants to wait for , before tuning my bike . I hope soon .
He explained , that after mapping ( with deactivated O2-sensors ) he will reactivate the O2 sensors .
Otherwise you would need a lot more fuel and it would not make sense .
How did you do this at yours ?

Using more fuel is the whole idea of tuning the motor to gain performance and effect cooling, it doesnt make sense to me to rectivate the O2 sensors after the tune, but i am an end user not a tuner.

When the time comes for TUV then i guess you might have to detune and reactivate the sensors for the inspection.

Be very careful how you proceed.  The new SEST is released and does have SmartTune.  It is designed for the 2010 bikes and may have an upgrade path for the 2009's.  In my experience, the O2 sensor bikes when put back in closed loop will yield more consistent MPG's.  An open loop bike will not use more fuel necessarily, it just will not be using the OEM O2 sensors for any fuel control.  The key thing here is that the tuner needs to calibrate the VE tables and optimize ignition.  There is also the support tables like cranking fuel, warmup fuel, accel, decel etc. etc. that need to be optimized for your bike.  A bike that is dyno tuned correctly will have great driveability, good mpg, and be a joy to ride.  You need to ask your "technical" guy to explain his tuning process to you and see what he says.  Length of time, how many pulls, decel tuning, throttle lag tuning, tuning fuel in both cylinders independently, how does he optimize ignition tables, are just a few questions that come to my mind.  A download and a dyno pull is not tuning.

@Highjagger
I recently had my Roadking (a 2007 SERK), besides some other upgrades, changed from the Power Commander to the Super SERT, and the O2 sensors (which were off during the time the PC was used) have now been connected again. I am very impressed with the power and and torque of the bike. Best is that I now have enough torque to pull from 40 mp/h (60 km/h) to to top speed all in sixth gear, without missing a beat. So this is matching what your guys are telling you. Mine was tuned at G&R, not a bad address.

Ride safely,
Louis

With OE gearing on a 2007 BT in 6th @ 40 mph you are pulling down below 1,500 rpm; that’s in the fast idle range.

And a real potential for crank problems!!! That's called lugging, whether you're feeling it or not! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Never ride below 2 grand in any gear except first when necessary. I'm usually at 3 grand and above, but I love being "on the cam"!!! ;)

Not to worry, it's not that I run the bike at 1,200 rpm for good. I found it really impressive, however, specifically compared to the stock set up, where the 6th was almost unusable below 65 mp/h.

Ride safely,

I'll second that, '09 Orange Crush consistent 38-40 MPG running 75-80 smooth as glass....In closed loop
