I need some help
« on: October 17, 2009, 10:32:22 AM »

Hello to all of you guys and I hope that all of you are well and living large! I have returned from the dead and buried to ask for help! hope you didnt need to take medications over this post

I had some fool pull out in front of me and I tried to avoid him but could not, so I hit the damn fool which trashed my front end and since then had 11k of repairs to bring my bike back to me in what I thought was perfect shape.
I won't both going into all of what the dealer did that I needed to repair in my own garage. (Theres a story)
What I have an issue with is that when I took my first ride I heard on several occasions a very ugly noise which was my brand new front fender rubbing on my right side lower. This ended up marring both the fender and the lower.
Obviously I have a clearance problem. I will tell you the the entire front end, engine guard, along with many other items had to be replaced, but I believe the engine guard must be from a different model. I need someone to tell me what the overall dimensions are of the 2004 FLHTCSE OEM/CVO engine guard is without the lower installed, measurements to anchored points such as (guards lower inner radius to frame at lower anchor position) or while front end is turned to its max left side and right side clearance to engine guard, both with lowers on and off to the fender.
I've already tried to reposition the lowers without any modification to them with the guard that I have without success of any clearance gain.
At this point this is what I have on mine with lowers off
Left side- turned to max right/center of fender straight to guard 2 5/8"
Right side- turned to max left/center of fender straight to guard 2 1/4"
If need be I will take some pics and post them.

Take a picture of where you are measuring.
I just sent this post to LtBawb, his lowers are currently off.

Hi Duane,
How've you been?
Thanks for the fast reply, and I'll take some pics and post them.

The 04 SEEG's did have issues with the lowers hitting fender. Many had the problem if they were not installed so that the lower was out as far as possible at the bottom. Doing this requires the upper part of the fairing to be rotated inward to allow the lower part to move out. Also the frend fender can be tilted a bit as well by loosening the four mount bolts repositioning the fender then tighten.

You mentioned a front end accident. And that the lower legs were replaced. Were they bent? If so the frame is most likely bent. Did you have the frame checked to be sure that the neck and or  frame downtubes are not bent. I cannot tell you how many frames that I have seen have been pretty badly bent from relatively minor accidents. There is no way to tell unless you get it into a jig.

Holy crap!  Nice to see you posting again, Mark! :drink:  Hope you're doing well, man!  Sorry to hear about the accident!

No accident involved, but I had that issue with my SEEG, too, and same side as yours with no rubbing whatsoever on the left.  Difference being I never, ever actually heard the fender rubbing the lower, but I did have some light scuffing on both.  I'm pretty sure mine was only rubbing on compression and when the wheel was turned.

I was able to sovle my rubbing by doing what Jim just described and most of the damage polished out.  Unfortunately, yours sounds more frequent/worse?  I'd suspect a bent frame, too.

Ya I know the lowers can be adjusted to a point, and I've tried that already.
The frame was my first thought when the accident occured and was told that it was fine. I've riden the bike now for more than 3k since the rebuild and it feels true and I can ride with no hands without any pulling, so I'm guessing the frame is okay.
I can't say if indeed it was checked on a jig
yes the legs were bent and replaced and if the frame is indeed bent and i cannot use my lower again without alteration then I'll alter them to fit and call it good that I still have my SEEG. I can't imagine not having it now.

Sorry I've been in a different universe, but I'm doing okay. Hope all is good with you.
I wasn't aware of other having this problem in the past, but I realigned mine very soon after buying it as I saw from the start that the lowers were very close at a hard turn to the left.
I wouldn't be surprised at all that the frame could be out and I will pull my tank this winter to check for any frame paint cracks there under, which would be a good indicator for a bent frame.

Geez Mark - we don't hear from you in over two years and then you drop this bomb on us? SEEGs are the best CVO's out there got to keep them going!

How are you feeling - get a clean bill yet? No ciggies?

I don't know what to say about my absence, guess it was easier for me to drop out of existence than to talk about my issues with others.
I can only ask for forgiveness and hope I've not offended anyone. If I have than I am really sorry. Guess I am an A-hole.
It has been  hard for me to adjust to this and it's taking a toll on the family, my life and my business.
I know I can ride the other bikes, there were two available the whole time, but the joy factor was seriously lacking.
As things are now theres no way that I could afford the cost to replace my SEEG, or absorb any big repairs to it.
So I am immensely pleased that I still have it and out riding it.
How am I? okay I guess, No, to the clean bill of health but better than 3 years back. I can do alot, some things I stay away from doing now.
Regarding my bike, I am hoping that this engine guard is not the right one and a simple swap to resolve the problem.
If not than I will deal with it as best I can.
