Adding XM module
« on: October 04, 2009, 09:38:29 PM »

I have a '10 SESG and I am thinking of adding the XM module. Since the module just plugs into the radio, that is a no brainer, but does anybody know where the antenna mounts?? Does it stay inside the fairing?? I thought Sat radio needed a clear view of the sky. The kit is HD # 76404-06

The antenna on my 09 SEUC is inside the fairing...not the best place for reception IMHO.

They do mount on the inside the fairing on the left side on a special bracket. I added XM Radio on my Zumo GPS and mounted the antenna inside the fairing on top of the radio. It works well, I've never had any reception problems unless I'm scooting along in heavily forrest areas. And i have the same problems with the XM in my car. You'll do fine mounting the antenna inside the fairing.  :2vrolijk_21: Just try to mount the antenna within an open area inside the fairing, such as on top of your OEM radio.

This is my install. Used 1 " x 1/2" aluminum angle with knee brackets to existing framework.

The antenna on my 09 SEUC is inside the fairing...not the best place for reception IMHO.

No worries about Sat  Antenna inside fairing so long as it is not blocked by metal or wiring loom or any conductive material. as an example... the antenna on a Jeep Wrangler equipped with Sirius is mounted on the "roll bar" beneath the fiberglass top. Interestingly many people place the antenna on their dashbords of their car... which is fine but on some models the uv tint blocks a lot of the signal.

Long story short... no probs inside fairing

My only problem with this setup is that I move the antenna from vehicle to vehicle (to boat).

Hard10... I'm a newbie but I think that you may be kidding... right? If not you'd have 2 options... get a second antenna or for real convenience why not install a wheel chock at the bow and bring the whole bike with you...lol

I wasn't kidding but I really like the second option! I could just see me now with the bike up on the bow.  :huepfenlol2: It would be a bitch getting down the gangplank at low tide. We have a 9' tide here.

On a serious note, the GXM antenna is serial number specific. It receives the data from XM or Sirius and not the radio so once installed, you would need to pay an additional monthly fee for another antenna.

Hello Hard10,
I used a Kuryakyn #1463 cup holder to mount a Garmin GXM antenna to my '06 Road King.  Although I did it to make it easy to remove the antenna for security reasons, it would make it real easy to move from bike to boat. I used velcro type cable ties to allow quick removal of the cable to the Zumo cradle. Sorry, I don't have any photos of this set up.

My wife tells me that they made a noticeable improvement from where she sits. (I installed JM in rear as well). I'm 62, been around motorcycles, hot rods and construction sites all my life, so I'm not too sure of what I'm hearing any more, but that being said, the music does come through loud and clear.
