When I said a lot less I meant it in the context of this motor. When you compare the 583 with it's 15° (yes that's no mistype 15) degree intake close VS the 585 which has a 45° intake close.
For comparison purposes calculated actuals based on 0 deck head chamber stock 96cc:
Stock motor, stock cam
9.3/1 static, corrected for cam 9.02/1 Cranking compression 185psi
Same motor with S&S 583, no other changes
9.3/1 static, corrected for cam 9.21/1 Cranking compression 190psi (~happy~)
Same motor with S&S 585, no other changes
9.3/1 static, corrected for camshaft 8.39/1 Cranking compression 169psi (very soft low end torque, late to come on)
Same motor heads milled .060, S&S 585
9.88 static , 8.9/1 corrected for camshaft Cranking compression 182psi (ho hum low end torque, a little better regular gas OK)
Same motor with 10.5/1 pistons, stock head chamber, S&S 585
10.35/1 static, 9.3/1 corrected for camshaft Cranking compression 193psi (~happy~)
Want an S&S cam for a stock motor use the 570 bottom line. With the 570 it will be ~happy~ at a 9.8/1, easily done with a head mill and have great torque right off idle. Avoid the easy start stuff IMO and just use the factory releases. If you have to have easy start OK but defeat the ACR solenoids with software or unplug them. If you want to use the 583 use it with a stock motor and don't expect anything earth shattering over stock, same note on the releases.
