Accu-pressure caps
« on: December 30, 2005, 04:59:39 PM »

Anyone try the caps that replace your tire valve cover and turn colors when the tire loses pressure?  You have to order them for the specific tire pressure you desire.  For example, if your running 36 in the front and 40 in the back you would order one of each.  If the pressure goes down by approx 3 psi yellow appears.  If it goes down another 3 psi it turns red.  They cost $5 a piece.  I am pretty anal regarding tire pressure and this would save time and crawling around.
Here is their website.  www.accu-pressure.com/cgi-bin/Store/index.cgi

Happy and Healthy New Year to all.

Have had them on and off a couple of vehicles.  After several months to a year the little "gauge" gets thrown off the threaded cap.  Doesn't lose air when this happens so it's no big deal.  But at least in my experience they've been more "cute" than "real."

If you are "anal" like you say about the pressures, I would not trust them to a $5 piece of plastic.  While there might be a situation like you run over something and have a slow leak, and this causes you to catch it earlier than you might have otherwise, there is no substitute for check the hard way, with an accurate gauge.  I have seen where these things should be in the yellow range when pressures were measured with a high-quality gauge, but weren't.

I have a small compressor in the garage and check the tires on the bike every one to two weeks during riding season.

My wife's mother gave her a set for her car for Christmas last year, they leaked air and didn't reflect the pressure accurately.  I wouldn't recommend them.
