We regularly see dry SE filter elements falling apart.

I had a different problem with mine.  I washing the bike one day before going for a ride (luckily) and noticed that the chrome cover on the air filter was loose.  I got the tools out to tighten it up and when I began to put a little pressure on the large center bolt that holds the chrome cover on, all of a sudden the cover is sitting in my hands.  I damn near dropped the thing.  The round center section around the large bolt hole had broke out.

Went to the dealer and they gave me a new one no questions asked.  I was talking to a buddy about it and he said he had the same thing happen to him.  He said someone told him that this is caused by not having the plastic backing plate to support the the chrome cover and the vibrations cause the metal to fatigue and then break.  His solution was to take some 1" thick 3M foam (weather stripping) and cut four squares to put on towards the outer portion of the air cleaner.  This is supposed to help distribute the vibration over the entire metal portion of the air cleaner instead just the area by the large bolt.

He has not had a problem since and neither have I since doing this with the new one.

There has indeed been more than a few with this problem ever since H-D went to the latest style CVO cover on the Touring models that has a rectangular center section instead of the traditional round center section.  The round section sits against the foam gasket all the way around the edge of the filter so it's fully supported and doesn't move.  The rectangular center sections only touch the round filter in a couple spots and the cover is free to move/vibrate/etc. which can lead to metal fatigue and fracture.  If using the new style CVO cover it is best to find a way to provide full support.  Mount the filter element to the cover with the center bolt (off the bike) and look at the gaps between the two parts for a good understanding of what I'm trying to say.

The oil in the filter is caused by pressure buildup in the engine.  Hi Revs will do that, combined with good oil pressure.  Not much you can do except ease up on the gas....  And who among us is going to do that?????

The oil in the air cleaner is oil mist in suspension that makes it through the breather system.  In many cases a lot of these bikes are accidentally overfilled at oil changes - people throwing 4 qts in a bagger and then it's at least 8-10 ounces over-filled.

Sure other types of damage could cause it, but I'd be willing to bet many of them are over-filled.  People forget that 8-10 ounces remains in the engine, then blindly follow dipsticks that are not the most accurate in the world.  Then poof - someone has a bike that mists heavily into the air cleaner.  Many times they "use oil" until the dipstick gets to a certain level then they stop.  This is because the system evacuated the excess oil and is now at a proper level. Just an observation.

8-10 oz left in the motor? That seems like a lot of oil.

That is the normal amount left in the bottom of the crankcases.  People don't realize that is in the motor and they throw in 4 qts.   You really should add 3.5 quarts on an oil change in a 4 qt TC system.

The same holds true if it's a 3.5 qt oil tank.  There is still 8-10 oz in the bottom of the crankcases.
