Riding for Southdakota to Dallas and on to Georgetown, tx
« on: April 04, 2010, 05:13:00 PM »

The wife and are going to ride down to Georgetown TX. We plan to leave Friday May 21st and hit Dallas on Sunday the 23rd. Monday we'll ride down to Georgetown to visit some friends. Tuesday we plan to take off and spend the rest of the week riding in Texas. I was thinking of riding west to the hill country.

I'm looking for recommendations. I like riding the country and stopping at interesting places. I like biker bars and places who cater to bikers.

Anyone having recommendations would be appreciated.  Also if there are areas or places to avoid that would be welcome too.

Where in NW  Iowa are you from? Brookings S.D. here.  I plan to ride down I29 to Kansascity and then I 35 into Dallas.  Sunday evening I plan to check out Strokers and have a few beers.  Was in Dallas last November and had a good time.  Then on to Georgetown, after a aday of visiting I have no plan after that? Have you ever rode in that areas?

Crunch,
We live on Hwy 59 on an acerage south of Worthington 55 miles. I am familar with Volga, I am an SDSU alumni. I have been down that direction in a car not on two wheels. We went south on near Neb City to Topeka then over to Whichita, then south on 35 to OKC and onto Dallas/Ft Worth. All pretty good roads last October. We are planning on traveling 2 lane roads down to Texarkana then down to San Antonio. Then interestate back home. Hwy 59 to  I-29 to KC then hwy 71 and back onto 59 to 79 and Austin to San Antoino.

I am picking my bike up at J&L on Sat, did you get your Ultra there?

I35 gets better the farther south you ride- or at least it did last year.  They're continually working on it.  Anyplace in the Hill country of Tx makes for great riding.  We'll be in Austin this weekend.  If I can get some time, I'll see where the locals head to for stopping joints.  If you want an interesting stop on the way down, the Ranger museum on the south side of Waco is pretty neat.  It's right on the east side of 35 as you head through town.

Here's a pretty good link on some of the best the Hill Country has to offer.  Also Ride Texas Magazine is a great source, I think you can find it on line.  If you can make it to Bandera the "Cowboy Capital of The World"  They hitch their horses to rails out side the bar and I'm a talkin REAL cowboys.  Leakey, TX VERY moto friendly, gotta ride FM 335, 336, & 337  "The Three Sisters" not for newbies, VERY technical but what a kick in the pants.  Hope this helps.  This year the wild flowers are supposed to be the best in 25-30 years so the Bluebonnets should be outstanding.  let me know if ya want more.
Ride Safe.

If you're heading through OKC you might check out Charley's. It's always packed with bikes.  I'll keep an eye out for you driving through if you're headed through here on the way to Dallas.

Also, I35 south of OKC will take you through the Arbuckle Mountains.  Not super awesome from the interstate, but take the turnouts and you can see some nice looking scenery.

Great info and right on.  Crunch Texas Hill Country has both great riding and some really good watering and eating spots for a friendly biker.  Makes me want to go for a ride.  Hope your trip is a good one.
