BushTec Hitch install complete...almost!
« on: May 25, 2007, 12:02:49 AM »

Well it wasn't as easy as the BushTec people would lead you to believe.  I had to get out the drill, dremel, and jig saw!  There was no way that the right side upper supports were going in without mods.

We'll see how it feels when I get it wired and get the trailer behind it.  I have an American Legend trailer.

Anyone on this forum however could handle this task.

I will finish the wiring on Monday.  Looks good I think.

What are you using in the filler strips?

Looks just like mine (only different color bike) everything lined up on my 06 and I didn't need to make any mods to get it to fit. If you have the trailer (OEM) Wiring Harness adapter* from J&P Cycles the wiring is the easiest part.

* type trailer wiring in the J&P web site (plugs between ) the rear OEM wiring (NO Splicing of the bike wires)

I've installed several of these on different bikes for people and have never had issues with things lining up.  Did you talk to bushtec about it they have great customer service.  When it's all over it will be worth the effort.  I tow a legend trailer and love it.

Put the receiver hitch on my '06 melon and now moved it to my '07 jester with no problems on either bike.  Concur on the J&P wiring harness adapter.  Makes for easy clean install and no mods to bike wiring.

All, it was not going to fit without drilling out the upper brace on the right hand side...I used pry bars and everything I could think of.  Yes I called BushTec and talked to Samuel numerous times and it was very helpful.  Bottom line was I had to drillout some holes.  It's all good.

I got a harness from American Legend because that is the trailer I will pull.  What does J&M sell?

The lights in the filler strips are something I did custom work on.  Those are Whelen Police Super LEDs, as of yet I have seen no LEDs that are as bright as these.  These are the LEDs you see on the new police cruiser light bars.  If you look at them from about 10 feet away you Will turn your retina's amber...their pretty spectacular.

Too many of my friends have been hit from behind so I went the extra mile to get some lights back there.  A machinist friend of mine cut the strips to fit the lights and he did a very professional job.

Here is the link for the lights I used.  It's just my opinion as to the brightness of them of course.  However, I would think that the lack of DOT approved stamp may mean that they're a little too bright for everyday useage.

I'm willing to take that chance however.  I almost ran over a sport bike a few months ago.  It was the middle of the day in bright sunlight and he slammed on the brakes to stop and turn and had only a small aftermarket taillight that I couldn't see.  It scared the crap out of me and made me look for something exceptional to put on the back of my back...that's the story.

When I get the lights hooked up I will take a picture for you.  How ever, if you see a police car with a low profile light bar in any color that is how bright these are.  Make sure it's a Whelen product though.

Here is the link.  http://www.whelen.com/details_prod.php?head_id=12&cat_id=74&prod_id=145

It is not the harness but an adapter to connect your harness to your bike's wiring without splicing.

The harness plug is the only way to go, just plug in and it has the pig tails marked and ready to splice.
