Starter problem
« on: August 27, 2010, 07:03:22 AM »

I ride an 07 Road King and have clocked over 30K. Recently I've been having a problem starting the bike. The starter will not engage and you can hear a faint "click" by the starter housing. I thought the security systrem may be causing the issue but the problem is sporatic. Usually after the bike cools down it will start. Is there a grounding issue in the starter solenoid. Mt friends are amused when I'm stuck and swear at the bike and threaten to trade it in. Any help is appreciated.

Have you checked your battery cables lately?  How about the battery itself?  Often when you get a faint click but no starter engagement it's due to low voltage.  High resistance at the connections can cause this, and it does normally get worse hot.  Check both ends of the cables for corrosion and tightness, and look for corrosion down in the cable ends where the terminals attach to the wires as well.  If you have a DVOM (volt-ohm meter), check for voltage drops from the actual positive battery terminal to the starter terminal.  There should be no discernable drop over that short distance.  Same for the battery ground terminal to the chassis ground.  If all that checks good, then get the battery load tested.
