Faulty Tires
« on: July 02, 2010, 02:54:54 PM »

Just ran into a tire problem on my 08' SERK; front tire is "cupping" (best way I can describe it), bulging in the center between each groove causing uneven wear. It's brought on a hell of a vibration in the handlebars that seemed to spring up overnight. I've got 8,500 miles on the tire, wondering if anyone else has had problems with their Dunlops? Took it in and the dealer said they'll get me some money off on the new tire so they must know of a problem I don't.

I don't mind popping for a new tire at 8,500....look at it like new tires are cheaper than new skin, but I've never seen a tire do this. I'm more curious than anything.

Funny, I always enjoyed "cupping" in the past, guess it's not so good when it applies to tires!

Cupping is usually caused by under inflated tires.. Except the Dunlop 407F, They aren't good. Their on the 09 - 2010 bikes. Well 09's as the 2010's have the new 408F.. Reversed tread of the 407F...

without creating a stir and another controversial thread about tire-if this is warranty work I guess your stuck with Dunlops-if it is your $$$ I suggest you consider the Metzler 880 Marathons-I have gotten 10K rear and 20K front with these on both my SERK and SECU (just ordered a rear at 11K). JMHO and there are lots of thoughts on this sight pro and con-

I agree, 3 sets of dunlops on my 07 serk all cupped. Now have ME 880 for 5000 miles no cupping  no noice and the bikes move from turn  to turn much better.    Billy

My dealer replaced my D407F on my SERG this morning with the 408F.  Was prepared to pay for it but they finally admitted their was a service notice on the 09 as long as there was still 3/32 of tread (mine measured 4/32 at 8700 miles) and if air pressure was correct.

I've got the D407 rear on my 2010 SEUC, got a little over 11K miles on it.  Seems to be cupped pretty bad so riding to the dealer this afternoon to have a checked out.  They said it was cupped due to too much rear brake being applied - does this sound right?  Front tire still looks and rides like new.

Just took the bike in for service after my westward-ho trip.  Everything checked out decent - they said the front brake rotor was warped and will replace under warranty.

Unless you've been locking the brakes and flat spotting the tire, no, that does not sound right.  But I have to give them credit for coming up with some new BS instead of just using the same BS the other dealerships use.  There are other threads on the site that detail some of what the various dealers have told others with the same problem.

What it all boils down to is that Harley and Dunflop have had major issues with the D407 tires, and they would rather screw over the customers than step up and take care of the problems.  After playing the same games with folks on the front tires, they ultimately had no choice but to fix the front tire problems due to the number of people affected and the obvious safety and legal implications.  For some reason they haven't stepped up in the same way on the rear tires, even though it is a similar issue.  Perhaps that is because people don't notice the cupping on the rear until they have a lot of miles, and by that time most of the tread is gone anyway.

I'd still contact H-D and file a complaint.  Be prepared with all pertinent information, like the actual tread depth measurement, and make a reasonable request, not an ultimatum.  If you've already used 60% of the tread, for instance, a reasonable request would be that they pick up 40% of the replacement cost.  I would guess, however, just based on posts from other folks, that at 11,000 miles you've probably used up closer to 75-80% of the tread, and H-D will tell you it's time to buy a new tire anyway.  But there is no harm in asking, and no harm in letting them know how you feel about the poor quality tire they put on your CVO.

Thanks Jerry.  I took the old rear tire from my dealer and had another tire person inspect it.  He said (just like you) that the braking "reason" was just an excuse, but he did measure tread depth and said the tire was pretty much used up.  New rear tire installed:  a brand spanking new D407!!  My dealer did install new rotors and it made a huge difference (no, really.......).  Their original reason/diagnosis/excuse was "excessive ABS vibration" before I indicated that the rotors might be a little warped...........
