Hawg Wired Ground Wire Location on SERG3???
« on: January 01, 2010, 10:40:27 AM »

Got my Double Shot Hawg Wired system installed but can't seem to find an existing bolt in close proximity to attach the amplifiers ground wire. Where have you guys picked up a ground? Oh, Thanks to Jim (HD-Dude) and Tony (Iron Cross) for there excellent services.

Just extend the ground wire.

The best place is the fairing support brace. It is a solid frame ground. The next best will be the ground lug on the top triple tree.

Ya know; I tried to use the fairing support brace, and when I checked it with an ohm meter it appeared to be a suitable location for the ground so I used it. The last thing I did was hook up the power to the battery and flipped the switch and the LED light lit for a second and went out  :confused5: Got the ohm meter out and recertified I had a good ground connection and.....nothing WTF  :nervous:, I know I had a ground connection last night :nixweiss: Oh well, I'll just ask my fellow SERG3 friends.

This morning I added black shrink tubing to the HW ground wire and routed it thru the fairing along the frame and down to the upper engine guard mounting bolt  :P Job done, Can't wait to get my head unit back from Iron Cross (couple upgrades) and wrap this project up.

Same thing happened to me. Used the fairing support for two months and worked fine. Then had to switch out a bad speaker and crossover and it wouldn't work. Turned out to be the ground on the fairing support. And I didn't touch it. Had to put a new ground to triple tree.  Funny things.

How do you like your new sound system? I just happen to be doing some research myself for a future stereo/amp/speaker upgrade. I've gotten some great advise on other systems and I would like to hear about your's as well.  Jim

Anyone know how much of a difference there is between the new DX speakers and last years CX speakers?

JimGlide;
It sounds great but I haven't been able to road test it yet. I was expecting the bass to hit a little harder but I guess ya just ain't gonna get much base out of a 5.250" speaker. The Hawg Wired stuff is first class and every one who has them loves them (from what I gather on this site). My bro-in-law just stuck a pair of J&M's 7.250" speakers in his 2010 RG and said they sound great, Next time I'm in Illinois I will do a comparison test. Hard to believe that the J&M 7.250 on a stock radio will out preform the Hawg Wired Dbl Shot system. Time will tell.

Your bike looks great, love the Paul Yaffe bars with heaters....Cool

The Dbl Shot System was both enjoyable and easy to install. The Hawg Wired instructions tell you everything.
Obviously the front fairing needs to come off.
Next take off your gas tank (new bikes are way easier now that the silly cross over tube is gone).
Run the power wire thru the fairing down the back bone with all the other HD wires.
Velcro the amp inside the fairing
Velcro the LH & RH speaker crossovers inside the fairing
change the speakers to Hawg Wired
Run the Ground (make sure you have a good ground)
Run the remote power wire from the cigarette lighter
A plug in here, there & there and your ready to hook the power up to the battery and flip the switch.

Hawg Wire supplies everything you need and talks you thru the install and final adjustments . Although I did add (4) wire connectors to the wires that go to the amp for the speaker connections rather than shove a bare wire in there.

It don't get much easier if you ask me. My biggest challenge was getting it done without the little lady getting wize to my little upgrade  ::)

i agree with sid8d2 its pretty easy ...the hardest part is putting the fairing back on ... the trim between the fairings is crap.... im going to remove the fairings again and replace it with something better (chrome trim )... and some good glue...
