Waking up my 2003 flhrsei2
« on: November 09, 2010, 12:49:22 PM »

I am either going to sell it or make it go faster.  Since it's 8 years old I am reluctant to spend big bucks to make this happen.  Some of the thoughts I have had include:

1 replacing stock cam with something more aggressive in lower rpms
2.Going from 5 speed to 6speed
3 31T sprocket

Aside from the Thunderheaders and techflusion fuel controller the bike is a stock 103cu".

Thanks for your thoughts

I think you will receive more usefull information if you re-post under the Twin Cam section.  That seems to be the place on this forum where you will get the best results.  Good luck and hope you get the results you are looking for.

Check out my signature w/the mods (Zippers 575 gear drive cams) I've done to mine...

Also you may want to check out the Freedom cams (YB13/14??) that were made specifically for the CVO 103ci heads. Either one of those would be good drop in cam choices.

Went with Freedom YB14's and SERT dyno runs...........worked for me. Copy of Freedom cams specs (older version) attached. Also check with HDDude(Jim) for his recommendations as well.

I owned 2 of this model motorcycle. The 2nd one was the better of the two. It had a set of Reinhart true duals, a Screamin Eagle Breather kit and a Screamin Eagle Race Tuner and a Baker DD6 trans. Tq and Hp numbers were both over 100 as measured by Bumpus H-D in Memphis TN after I sold it to member MJZ. With the Baker DD6 those numbers translated into a very sweet seat of the pants ride.

Woke my 08 FLHRSE4 up with a "square motor" upgrade including 10.5:1 domed HD Rading SE Performance Pistons, Ported/Polished Head works compliment machining specialist of Eagle HD Lafayette, IN, 256E cams,. Earlier mods include PIII tuner, B2B True Duals, etc. Not too radical, still a touring pkgs and small impact on fuel econ but widely awake now. Wanted to retain my OE "jugs" so I opted not to bore over and keep it moderate. Still a $4k motor upgrade it is a screamin eagle now.

Pre-breakin Dyno (3-pulls) placed me at 117hp/121 lbs ft. Have not Dyno again following breakin but the moto rock & rolls now. Suspect we're chart 120/124 - 121/128 next dyno now that she loosened up a bit.

I was going to comment on this post but upon giving it some more thought I figure I'd best leave well enough alone

I'm dissapointed in you B B  ;)

Comparing an '08 to an '03 is not exactly apples to apples, as they are two TOTALLY different engines.  With the '03 103" motor, you have, IMO, one of the best motors HD ever made.  With the exception of the cam chain tensioners, it is a very reliable engine, and that weak link is easily fixed if you're planning on doing cams, as you can do either gear driven or the newer style tensioners.  A "drop in" cam, like some already suggested, and good tune, would be the less expensive thing to do, and give you a bit more punch than you currently have, WITHOUT getting into the motor in a serious way and doing head work, pistons, blah, blah, blah.  In your original post, you mentioned that you did not want to sink a bunch of money into the bike at this point, so just cams, a tune, and the 6 speed would be a great bang for the buck change, IMO.  Jim (HD dude here on the site) can help you out with choices, and if you live anywhere near northern California, he'd be the one doing the work, if I were in your shoes.  Unfortunately, he is about 2K miles away from me... :(
