Amsoil 60 Wt. Synthetic
« on: January 05, 2010, 10:01:22 PM »

I am currently using amsoil straight 60 Wt Synthetic in my 95 Heritage(with S&S107 ) with great results (amsoil part no. AHRQT ). I was just wondering if anyone here has tried it in their 110, or has any opinions about usinging it. I am currently using redline 20-60 in my 09 SEUC with good results, but my 107 runs so quiet with the straight 60 wt amsoil I was thinking about giving it a try this spring in my ULTRA. Any input will be appreciated. (most of the year being in SOCAL I ride in a lot of hot weather ) CAHDBIKER

I run the redline 20-60 year round with no ill effects here in FL. I have friends that use straight 60w dino oil so I would guess in hot weather you would be good to go with the 60w syn.  It is also stated in the owners Manuel you can use it in 80* weather.   Doc

I use that straight 60 in one of my older bikes. It is  stroker and tends to run hot. That bike has run for a few years without any problems. It's important to just let it warm up properly.
IMHO, of course!

Service manuals even refer to the use of heavier oils in ambient temps above 60*, and 80*.

At normal operating temps, the difference in viscosity between the two products is insignificant (look at viscosity at 100°C (212°F)).  Where you will see a difference is during starting and warm-up, with the straight 60 having a significantly higher viscosity (again, compare viscosities at 40°C).  Then, look at the VI for each product.  The VI will give you an idea of how much and how rapidly the oil will "thin out" as temps increase.

I don't see any advantage of going to the straight weight in this case, and would prefer the wider temperature range of the multigrade.  Sure, if you only ride when it's 100°F I guess you don't need to worry about low temp starting and initial lubrication during warm-up.

All the synthetics protect, but at full operating temps, the lifter "pump up" is compromised, as the viscosity is in the toilet. :)

The data sheets and viscosity / VI numbers at 100°C are what are significant, as Jerry shows.

Then why does "Ed's" bike have lifter noise with Syn III, and when when the correct viscosity for the ambient temp is used, then "Ed" becomes happy, as the noise is significantly less, or gone altogather???????
