Auxillary Gas Tank
« on: March 09, 2010, 12:50:28 PM »

Has anyone added an auxillary gas tank to their bike?  If so, what did you go with?  I've got the 2006 SE UC with the 5 gal tank.  Most of the guys I ride with have 6 gal tanks, so I'm always running out of gas first.  I ran into a rider in Wyoming doing the 11K miles in 11 days Iron Butt rally.  He had a flat auxillary gas tank that sat under his tour pack.  When his primary tank got low, he flipped over to his auxillary tank.  I'm sure he must have had it made specifically for his bike.  At the time, I wasn't interested in auxillary tanks so I didn't ask where he got it made.  I haven't been able to find anything but round dune buggy tanks on the internet, or tanks that are located where the tour pack normally goes.  I'd like something that fits under the tour pack and isn't an eye sore, but can't find anything like that.  I was curious if anyone else has researched this?

I had one mounted in the RH saddlebag on a bike that I had with a side car, gave me an extra 3 gallons and the switchover was all electronic, had its own fuel pump.  Bike had  3 carbs though not EFI.  Not sure who made it but it was made to fit in the saddlebag and was all aluminum formed and tig welded.  Quite a neat set up, but always made me nervous with the gas tank in the saddlebag.  I am sure you could get a fab shop to make you one up to custom fit under the tourpack.

Me I like the stops.

You could just add a 6 gallon tank to your bike, or add a new bike with a 6 gallon tank.

Anything you want. Would use an electric to back feed the main tank when it gets low. Careful this is gasoline ~~Danger~~ and the install needs to be sanitary and hopefully you don't leave it running and overfill the main tank.

A few of the guys I ride with have the newer 6 gallon tanks.  When we are on a ride it is already decided that we stop every 100 miles or so.

My riding buddies are 55 and older. We stop more often to EMPTY our "tanks", than to fill up!

I have one of those "fancy" 6 gallon tanks, and I rarely get over 5 gallons in it ( there was that one BAD time I got 5.974 gallons once, didn't know the next gas station was about 35 more miles than I thought). Anway, if you have 6+ gallons of fuel you would be in the saddle for over 3.5 hours. Honestly I've done over 1000 miles in one day, but one should rest/center yourself after about 2-3 hours. Perfect time to refuel. Bikes are way too dangerous to ride fatigued, and as seasoned riders/drivers will tell you the key is to take frequent breaks for the long haul. By the way, the longest ride was from El Paso, TX to Navarre, FL left E P on December 17, got to Florida on the 18th.

I rode cross country on my 03 VROD and our group had to stop every 120-130 miles.  First couple of days the group gave me s**t about stopping.  After that they wanted to stop every 80-100 miles, then it was my turn to dish out the crap!!!

I've never had any problem putting 5 gallons in my 6-gallon tank.  But I've had to put 5.019 gallons in my 5 gallon tank before.  You can imagine how conservative I was with the throttle the last 20 miles on that one!

Ypi are correct about running the tank over, the one I had yo had to watch closely or you could overflow if the tank was half full when you hit the switch.  Even worse if you hit it by accident whith a near full tank, it would overflow onto the hot pipes and engine creating a big hazard.

You actually had a bit more room than you expect.  Have been empty and put 5.56 gallons in the five gallon Electra Glide tank.
