Update: Harley-Davidson donates $165,000
The Harley-Davidson Foundation, through the recommendation of its Tomahawk Plant Committee, has agreed to replace the laminate floor at the Tomahawk fieldhouse with an appropriate wood-based gymnasium floor. Harley-Davidson will contribute $165,000, the total cost of the project. Tomahawk schools have looked to the local community to help fund the gymnasium's refurbishment, including replacement of the floor, as the current planned budget does not allocate funds for a large capital project. Stress fractures in athletes using the laminate-over-cement floor have been a continuing problem. "We believe this project is an outstanding way to promote health and wellness in the community where we live and work," said Mike Heerhold, general manager, Harley-Davidson, Tomahawk Operations. "Because of that, we decided to ask the foundation board to go above and beyond normal project funding and help make this a reality for Tomahawk." Local Harley-Davidson officials worked closely with the Hatchet Booster Club to secure the donation, David Duncan, club president reported at the Feb. 14 Tomahawk School Board meeting. Construction will begin in June and be completed by the start of the 2006-07 school year. The city is planning a formal dedication ceremony in September to coincide with the annual Fall Ride for MDA motorcycle event in Tomahawk.
