Front tire
« on: May 25, 2010, 09:08:25 PM »

Anybody use anything other than a D408F on the front? Also, anybody know if the OEM tires are bias ply or radial? I'm considering using a Dunlop E3 on the front (slightly lower load rating). Any other suggestions?

Why?

My D408F on the 09 SEUC is at 24,000 miles and has another 3/4K miles left.
Based on my past experience with front tires I'm ecstatic getting over 20K.

I'm at 15k and the wear bars on the sides of the tire are starting to wear. Pretty strange, according to the wear indicators one side is worn more than the other, both sides worn more than the middle (never wore out the sides of a tire on a Harley before). I'm considering the E3 because they are cheaper, I don't have to go to a Harley dealer to get one, and I get about the same mileage out of an E3 as I do the D408F.

According to the Dunlop website (and the designation of the tire):  bias ply.  JMHO, but tires would be the last place I'd try to save money on the bike.  E3's have been out a long time and the technology of the D407 - 8's should be better.  Mine have been fine for 7K miles though HD replaced my initial set due to cupping.

Are you riding primarily on crowned roads?  That would cause the left side of the front to wear more.  Otherwise, check the balance / alignment.   :nixweiss:   :nixweiss:

My tire has been fine as well for 15k. I don't have a problem with the tire other than I am a little disappointed with the mileage. I'm used to getting about twice from the front as i do from the rear. Although this is my first set, I'm seeing about 1.5 times the mileage from the front. I've gotten better mileage out of the E3, albeit a 16" tire rather than the 18", so that's why I was considering that tire instead.

I have 10,000 miles on my 408 frt tire and I,ll be lucky to see 12,000 on it, the 407 rear looks like I will get another 5,000 miles out of it. I keep the tire pressure 36 frt, 40 rear and check every time before riding.   Doc

The best price I could find online, for my rear tire was $137, then I discovered wilson had it for $25 less than that! Free shipping too.

I run 40psi front & 42 rear on the SERG. 16k+ and running on the front and got almost 13k on the rear. Running slightly higher psi seems to help.

Did you get the 407 or the E3? I couldn't find a D408F or a 407 on that site. Great prices on the E3 though, thanks.

according to the wear indicators one side is worn more than the other,

logically ,
right side drive traffic you allways have slow narrow ride side twisties and faster wider left twisties.
so oen side is more stressed than the other .
