More on cam chain tensioner '04 EGlide!!!
« on: March 22, 2010, 05:01:30 PM »

Well, finally going to break down and change the cam chain tensioners. It's on a 2004 Screaming Eagle Electraglide  with 37,000 miles on it (one of those pumpkins). Going to do it myself. Never been into one of these twin cams before. QUESTIONS??? Do I need any speacial tools, do the push rods, lifters etc. need to come out first before pulling off the plate that holds the chain and pulleys. I've seen on this forum one side of the plate, is the other side similar and do the cams come off with the plate? Just hate surprizes (like things falling off in my lap and not knowing what position they go back). Anyway, any input AND PICTURES from you experienced folks who have been through this would be greatly appreciated. Also any tips on changing out anything else in there that needs it while I'm in there would help, things that don't dig too deep into my pocketbook. Thanks Mike

need a service manual-they are pretty clear on how to do it. need special tool to replace the inner cam bearings which you should do while its apart. inspect the oil pump for scoring. put a baisley spring in the cam plate to increase oil pressure.  a set of screaming eagle adj tapered pushrods will be needed. you could go gear drive but you would need gear drive cams. you can handle it its not to tough :bananarock:

I put gear drives in one bike and the SE hydraulic Camp plate kit in another.  Took pictures and did a step by step post on this site for both.
Do a search using my screen name.

I'd find the post for you but I'm doing this on the phone.
