I do all the service on my own bike, mainly because I just don't trust my ride (or anything else I own) to the hands of some lacky in the back. No disrespect to the true technicians, just their wannabe counterparts and/or the dealership owners unscrupulous tactics.
That being said... I did take the bike to the dealer for the first service, just to be sure everything was in it's place and there were no "real" issues that could grow into bigger problems, and to protect the warranty. And during that initial service visit, I asked a lot of questions, and spoke with the deralership owner, personally. All other service after that, I performed, and I'm confident that I performed those service intervals properly and thoroughly. Of course, the service manual is a valuable tool. Every owner should have one, if fo no other reason than to educate themselves about their machine. For what it's worth, the local dealership charges $200-$300 for the initial service and about $400 for the 10k service. Depends if you go with synthetic or dinosaur oils.
As for LVHD... I don't care for them, at all. I visit Vegas a couple times a year, and because I ride HD, I visit the local dealers. In fact, I travel quite a bit for work, and make a point to visit dealerships whenever possible. I like to see what's popular in other regions, collect t-shirts, and just keep on top of the new HD offerings. And to be quite honest, LVHD is one of the dealerships that you just don't get that "warm, fuzzy" feeling at. I've noticed that several of their employees are not very familiar with bikes, or riding. And that's an immediate turn-off in any dealer. When I go to look at new bikes, I want the sales staff to know more about the bikes than me. Don't you?
I 've also noticed that they are at the top of the list for high service costs. And that can't be blamed on high real estate, because the neighboring fast-food joints don't have inflated prices too. I could go on and on.
