Las Veags Harley...
« on: April 28, 2010, 09:18:17 PM »

Got stranded in Vegas for the night with some severe winds/blowing dust storms etc soooo... overdue for a 10K service and called Las Vegas Harley to see if they could get me in and they said sure... I ask how much? He says about $550.00 to get you out the door...   Really?   Needless to say I didn't go since I know it's MUCH less than that where I typically go... and another 550 miles home so no big deal but geesh...

Curious what others are paying and/or what dealers are getting??

If I remember correctly that's about what it is at my dealer. 1000 mile is $350.00 i think 5 and 10k are $500-$550.00

Have seen comparable prices posted on service department wells in many dealerships.  Given that it's rare the shops seem to actually cover everything on the list (too often it's an expensive fluids change), that anything on the list a guy can do at home with a service manual in his lap and that most everything there are things we should be familiar with if we're going to be out in the boonies on these machines anyway there's little reason to pay a dealer for these "regular" services.

I agree with Two Lane 100% The Harley service manuals are fantastic. Scan the service pages highlight the milage column and check off each item as you go down the list.

Another thought is that, especially if you're doing 5000 mile service intervals, most of the things to check on the various service intervals lists you can pretty quickly review during a walk around while all the various fluids are draining during each oil change.  Do those checks religiously each oil change while also checking for loose parts and fasteners.  You won't add much time to an oil change.  You're ride will be much more reliable. And then only every 20k or so will you really need to tear in to much extra.

CAP, You definitely  made the right choice by not paying the overinflated service charge. By looking at the list of items on the HD regular service intervals chart it seems that most of us can perform the tasks. Most of them seem to come under the catagory of check or inspect except for changing fluids, grease steering head bearing, clean air filter, lubricate kick stand etc. I have the service manuel and at first read changing brake pads seems a little more complicated than on my Heritage, but seems doable. I think the only thing that requires some special tools on the 09 and newer are the tools to adjust belt and torque the rear wheel, but I figure when I get a new tire they can do that and it will require adjusting my belt as part of replacing the rear tire, or if I think my belt needs adjusting I can go in and get that done for about 1/2 hour labor. I guess the bottom line is that whenever I have knuckled under and paid for a 5k or 10k service I feel like I am paying $350.00 or more for a fluid change.(except on my 95 Heritage because they have to grease the wheel bearings) Just my opinion. My dealer is much more reasonable then that, and I believe that they do all the items on the list.

However, I still do all the service interval maintenance myself.  For one thing, I don't run HD oil (Let's not have that discussion again).  I also agree with 2lane that you should understand your bike better as a mechanical issue could leave you in a much more precarious situation than in a car.  And finally, even if my dealer is reasonable as far as dealers go, they're still a Harley Dealer.  It offends me to pay even what would be considered reasonable for HD.

But, since I don't have equipment to change the tire myself I do let them do the service minus the fluid changes when I'm having a tire replaced.  I think it's good to have a professional look over it once in a while.  IF YOU CAN TRUST YOUR "PROFESSIONAL!!!!".  I happen to trust my dealer.  I'm in the minority.

Hope the four of you had a nice ride across Death Valley Chuck and hope your wife is enjoying the ride.

The LV prices are rediculous.......and I thought $385 was robbery. :nixweiss:

If you look in your owner's manual, most of the service involves "checking" various items.
At $85 and hour, the dealer is racking up the time, thus the price climbs.
You can do most/all of this yourself if you have the time and patience.
It's not too hard to change fluids, and you will KNOW you tightened the drain plugs, and wiped fingerprints off your gas tank!!

Mine's a little lower then that, JC.  But that's the typical range for a 10k.  The 5ks are usually a bit cheaper.  On a dresser they're supposed to pull the fairing.  You and I both know that's no big deal, but I think most people think it's a major task so they don't argue with the outragous price.

I do all the service on my own bike, mainly because I just don't trust my ride (or anything else I own) to the hands of some lacky in the back. No disrespect to the true technicians, just their wannabe counterparts and/or the dealership owners unscrupulous tactics.

That being said... I did take the bike to the dealer for the first service, just to be sure everything was in it's place and there were no "real" issues that could grow into bigger problems, and to protect the warranty. And during that initial service visit, I asked a lot of questions, and spoke with the deralership owner, personally. All other service after that, I performed, and I'm confident that I performed those service intervals properly and thoroughly. Of course, the service manual is a valuable tool. Every owner should have one, if fo no other reason than to educate themselves about their machine. For what it's worth, the local dealership charges $200-$300 for the initial service and about $400 for the 10k service. Depends if you go with synthetic or dinosaur oils.

As for LVHD... I don't care for them, at all. I visit Vegas a couple times a year, and because I ride HD, I visit the local dealers. In fact, I travel quite a bit for work, and make a point to visit dealerships whenever possible. I like to see what's popular in other regions, collect t-shirts, and just keep on top of the new HD offerings. And to be quite honest, LVHD is one of the dealerships that you just don't get that "warm, fuzzy" feeling at. I've noticed that several of their employees are not very familiar with bikes, or riding. And that's an immediate turn-off in any dealer. When I go to look at new bikes, I want the sales staff to know more about the bikes than me. Don't you?

I 've also noticed that they are at the top of the list for high service costs. And that can't be blamed on high real estate, because the neighboring fast-food joints don't have inflated prices too. I could go on and on.
