Starter issues
« on: April 29, 2010, 11:58:14 PM »

Hey Folks  I need some direction here.  My 07 Fxstsse has gone through a starter drive assy. each season.  It just failed again.  they replaced the drive once. The starter once and it has happened again.     My comp. releases are working.  These units just are not holding up.  Anyone have an idea for a workable replacement.  My bike is out of warranty and i just want this issue fixed.  Do you know of any good aftermarket solutions.

My '07 cuse just turned 61k on the clock and I replaced the starter last month.  Second replacement so the original the the first replacement have failed.  My ACRs seem to be and were reported to be working properly.  So I think it is just the nature of the 110 beast with the stock cams.

Well, it is under the extended service contract for 4.5 years longer so I doubt I'll do anything to disturb that.  I paid the $50 deductible for the last starter since my factory warranty had expired.  And under the terms of the service contract you only have to pay the deductible once for a covered repair.  So whenever this one needs to be replaced it will be totally at no charge.  The last one did not fail totally - I just got that 'grinding/clashing' noise ever so often as I cranked the engine.

I DID have a comp release fail about 10K miles ago (got 29K now).  It was starting fine up to recently, every once in awhile it's kicking back and having to have a restart.  I think a comp release is screwing up again.  Warranty ends in June so hope it crashes soon.

Try the MES Starter clutch. I use them at the shop with great success, In fact none have failed. And they carry a lifetime warranty. Retail on the clutch is 149.

Seems to me changing the starter clutch is treating the symptom - a working comp release addresses the problem.

3 starters???  Sounds to me the starter is NOT the problem.  Anyone verify the comp releases are working?
