Need update on Progressive Monotube front end
« on: February 21, 2010, 08:16:14 PM »

There was a thread going in January about the Progressive Monotube front shocks. People were going to put them on. How have you liked them?  Has anyone that doesn't have to put up with "white rain" put them on this winter? I'm thinking of getting a set and was hoping for an update to tell me how good they are.

I am ordering a set this week from Phatperformance and shove them in my 09 SERG.  Let you know the results in a couple of weeks.

I've put about 600 miles on mine , through serious twisties / freeway  and everything in between.  ALong with thier Touring link , the bike feels great ,  everyting is very well balanced.  I can hold about a 2 foot tighter line through corners, and no more mushy wallowy feeling.

I had the Monotubes installed in my 07 SEUC with 440hd's. The bike handles much better. My only compaint was the front end sits about 1/2" lower and I used the standard kit, not the lowered kit. I hear they now have shims to fix this, I wish they had offered them when I did my bike. From my personal experience the biggest improvement came when I rode two up, much better. I was thinking about trading for a new 2010 untill I did the upgrade, Now I am totally happy with my 07. For the differance in money, it's just not worth it now, at least for me.

While at the Laughlin River Run I stopped in and chatted with the Progressive guy who knew a great deal about the monotubes.  I asked about finished height on the standard unit.  He indicated it would be about the same or a little lower.  He also said they ship the kit with a spacer that goes under the spring if that's a concern.  Sales for this product far exceed their projections.

I asked how long a HD shop should take to install a set. Two hours to a max of 2 1/2 hours.  Most of the time is spent taking off stuff to get to the forks.  Actual installation at that point is minutes.

I got my Monotubes (31-2501) last week.  Waiting on the 12” rears (940-4020-UT) to come in the first of next month.  All through One Stop Moto after talking to Progressive Suspension.

I installed the Monotubes and 440's in the rear of the SERG.  Front feels much more stable and still working on the rear setup.   :bananarock: :bananarock: :bananarock:

So, I had the Monotubes removed yesterday and had them put in the Ricor Intiminators.  Big positive difference.  No clunking and the first thing I did was ride over the curb at the gas station last night three times and it did not bottom out at all. Nice smooth transition and no noise. Then it got dark and I won't have time to ride until Sunday, as I'll be out of town. But I'll post a comparison.  It took 2 1/2 hrs to switch them out at $70.00/hr = $175.00.

My monotubes, purchased for the 2009 serg, are still in the box waiting for more info from your experience.  Was the clunking a consequence of bottoming out or was it traced to something else.  I get an intermittent clunk when I apply the front brake.  Was your clunk traced to that as well?
Was the monotube installed with the spacers or the clip to apply a preload?
Thanks for sharing your experience.

Great to have someone with 1st hand experience post a comparision on these two products. I just had the Intiminators installed in the 02 SERK and was thinking about the Monotubes for the 08 SERK.

Can you list the positives / negatives of the two systems?
-front end dive
-pot holes - bottoming out
-tracking in curves
-wheel hop

Thanks JW

IROAR, I did not have the spacer preloads in, since mine (and other early ones) were shipped without them. In talking with Progressive, they sent me some. I wasn't going to pay $175 to have them installed just to try it,when they said it wouldn't help the clunk or bottoming out. The spacers would only help raise the height of the front end. Frank at Progressive started out to be helpful, but then dropped the ball and never got back to me. I lost faith in him as well, as he wasn't trying too hard.
The progressive Monotube height was 35 3/4 and with the Ricor it is 36" (see other thread for measurements). The Monotube was 12 1/4 from the middle of front axle to the "cowbell" (covering of the fork) and the Ricor is 13 1/4. So I would definitely put the spacers in, even if they don't help with bottoming out.
I'll give a better ride report after I get a chance to try them out this weekend.

No clunking here , even over some Gnarly train tracks that typcially rattle my fillings loose.

Is that with the Progressive Monotube #31-2501 installed?
