I've always wondered why people mark over their tags in pictures. What can the sneaky folks do with your tag number that they couldn't do with tag numbers they just wrote down say on the highway?

I can't speak for anyone else but the simple answer for me is that I work in I.T. and have exposure to what can be done to someone with very little personal information.  You're right... anybody riding down the street behind me can take my tag number but there are far fewer people riding behind me than are surfing the internet.  Tag number can be traced back to home address, etc. etc.  For me, it's just a comfort thing... not meant to be absolute, just doing what little bit I can to enjoy the forum yet be practical.  To each their own I suppose...

Ok, makes more sense now.  I was thinking about preventing bike theft, not ID theft.
