I've got 950 on mine.  I'm gonna check it when I go to lunch and if it has burned a quart I'm taking it back to the dealer.  That's ridiculous.

I burned a half quart in the first 400 miles, now have 975 and hasn't touched a drop. I attributed the early consumption to break-in.

These motors don't like full oil levels. It just gets blown out. I run mine 1/4 to 1/2 qt low from full.

That is not normal consumption.  It is, however, a cover-their-ass specification they've published to avoid having to deal with what really is unacceptable usage should they choose not to.

The usage you're seeing may not be as bad as you think though.  If the bike came to you filled to the full mark on the dipstick with a cold engine it was actually overfilled and will push some oil out.  With a cold engine have it filled about halfway between full and add (or even just a bit less) on the dipstick and see if your consumption issues begin to go away.

My motorman and tunner had me take the syn3 out and break bike in with harley 20/50 for 5000 miles .I have done this with 07 also whenever they had jugs off and new pistons and it seemed to work by not using oil.

My 08, which I got in Sept. 07, has used a quart every thousand miles since new. I complained loudly and constantly to the service writer. His answer 'according to the MoCo that is acceptable". Have maintained right along that is not acceptable to me. I previously put 45,000 miles on a Wide Glide and probably added a quart between 5,000 mile services the whole time. My wife also has an 08 with 10,000 miles and has added perhaps 2 quarts. The dealer knows this. When I had the recall performed in November 08 they discovered the valve guide seals leaking and fixed them under warranty. In November 09
after fouling my fourth set of plugs in 17,000 miles discovered valve guide seals leaking again! Had to use my extended warranty forthat one. Complained to MoCo and got $250 store credit from Corporate. Since my last service at 20,000 miles the consumption has increased to a quart in 60 to 750 miles. This time I went directly to the Service Manager and had him check the oil himself. His response"What the F_ _ _ !!!!" Dealership is now into fix-itmode. They have topped off my tank 4 times in the past month and gave me a quart to take on trip to Raleigh for H.O.G. training. Went to the dealership the day after I got back and let them top off again also pulled plugs. Front plug beginning to foul and seepage around both base gaskets. Appointment made for next Monday to pull heads and jugs to find the problem. I met a factory rep at the store and he began to explain the same old song to me and I finally told him if they didn't wish to acknowledge the fact there is something wrong with my motor I might as well get rid of it and get a Honda. He was not happy, but I felt better momentarily.
Will keep you updated.
I think wih new 2010 it might be time to start the procedure with the dealership of tracking oil consumption. Take the bike in and they top it off and "seal"
the filler neck. Bring the bike back every 500 to 600 miles and they check your oil and top it off. They will record the mileage and create the paper trail to present to the MoCo. Good Luck and stay persistent.

The guide fit to valve stem clearance has not been fixed even in the program heads. The valve seals are good now but they can't compensate for too much clearance so thier life is short. If they use oil from day one I suspect breakin issues. Oil carry over accompanys that

Just an update. Completed the required consumption test.(Dealership topped off with 5 quarts in about 3500 miles)
Pulled heads (for the third time) and determined that valve guides themselves were the problem from day 1.
Rings were right side up and appeared to be functioning properly. Service Manager decided to change them anyway.
Burnt oil on top of pistons about 1/8th inch thick also around combustion chambers and seals leaking again on front head.
Ordered new guides from Factory and Service Manager determined fitment not proper so ordered oversize guides from Factory.
New guides installed and apparently changed alignment of valve stems and required cutting valves and seats.
May get bike back today or tomorrow.
Asked Service Writer if I am the Guinea Pig on this process as it has been two weeks today.
Will post results after break in!

I have used less than 1/2 a quart of oil in my 2010 SESG with 3200 miles.  I keep the oil level just at the full mark and do a hot oil check on the jiffy stand.
