My 08, which I got in Sept. 07, has used a quart every thousand miles since new. I complained loudly and constantly to the service writer. His answer 'according to the MoCo that is acceptable". Have maintained right along that is not acceptable to me. I previously put 45,000 miles on a Wide Glide and probably added a quart between 5,000 mile services the whole time. My wife also has an 08 with 10,000 miles and has added perhaps 2 quarts. The dealer knows this. When I had the recall performed in November 08 they discovered the valve guide seals leaking and fixed them under warranty. In November 09
after fouling my fourth set of plugs in 17,000 miles discovered valve guide seals leaking again! Had to use my extended warranty forthat one. Complained to MoCo and got $250 store credit from Corporate. Since my last service at 20,000 miles the consumption has increased to a quart in 60 to 750 miles. This time I went directly to the Service Manager and had him check the oil himself. His response"What the F_ _ _ !!!!" Dealership is now into fix-itmode. They have topped off my tank 4 times in the past month and gave me a quart to take on trip to Raleigh for H.O.G. training. Went to the dealership the day after I got back and let them top off again also pulled plugs. Front plug beginning to foul and seepage around both base gaskets. Appointment made for next Monday to pull heads and jugs to find the problem. I met a factory rep at the store and he began to explain the same old song to me and I finally told him if they didn't wish to acknowledge the fact there is something wrong with my motor I might as well get rid of it and get a Honda. He was not happy, but I felt better momentarily.
Will keep you updated.
I think wih new 2010 it might be time to start the procedure with the dealership of tracking oil consumption. Take the bike in and they top it off and "seal"
the filler neck. Bring the bike back every 500 to 600 miles and they check your oil and top it off. They will record the mileage and create the paper trail to present to the MoCo. Good Luck and stay persistent.
