Engine Dies
« on: May 16, 2010, 11:05:47 AM »

I have a friend who has an 07 SEUC. The bike has a SEAC, Rinehart TD's and dyno tuned with a HD Race Tuner. The bike now had about 10,000 mile on it. This problem just started when he was at the Laughlin River Run last month. He will be riding and it will just die. When he goes to restart the bike it just turns over and will not fire up. This has happend to him twice now. He had the dealer pick it up and when it's at the shop it won't act up.  They say there are no codes and nothing is wrong with the bike. The last time they had the bike they put 80 miles on it with no problems. Needless to say he is worried about this happening again when he is out riding. Does anyone have any ideas what the problem might be?

Possibly an faulty crank shaft position sensor, they won't throw a code usually.

Any chance he changed the handle bars on the bike or had the heated grips replaced?

Check the tightness to the wires connected to the 50 amp fuse under the seat infront of the battery.

It has the stock handlebars and heated grips, no change there. I will have them check the electrical fittings noted here. You would think the dealer would have checked everything, but you know how that goes. We went for a 175 mile ride yesterday and it did not act up. I do have have to say however, he had the 10,000 mile service done a couple weeks ago. When we rode yesterday the front wheel/handlebars started wobbleing/shaking back and forth at 70mph and above. He says the bike was always smooth before. He says they changed both rotors during the service because they were warped. Doesn't seem that just changing the rotors would make it act like it did. He called the dealer and returned it for this yesterday. Man, some dealers....

Sounds like someone went a bit overboard on the neck bearing adjustments.

Yes, Some times. As for other possible problems, does he loose power to lights or speedo? If it were a loose battery connection or something like that should notice loss to other systems.

Good point, When it dies it will turn over but not start. It seems that once it sits for awhile it will start up. That is what happened with the dealer. It died and would not start. The dealer picks it up takes it in and it will start and not die for them to diagnose.

Not sure what the Crank sensor goes for, but that is the symptoms of a bad sensor. Because a bad sensor just doesn't sense the rotation of the motor, there will be no code thrown, no spark, or fuel because the ECU thinks the motor is not spinning.

They're not frighteningly expensive.  Less than $50 if I remember right.  Cheap compared to letting the dealer troubleshoot.  Cheap enough to try it and see; especially when you remember that even if that doesn't fix it it's worth having a spare in your saddlebag.

I mentioned the crank sensor to him to tell the dealer. The bike is under the extended warranty so maybe they will change it under warranty.

My bike now has 30K miles.  At 24K miles, on a 4-lane, doing about 65 mph, the bike shut down, like you hit the kill switch.  I coasted to the breakdown lane with the clutch pulled in and found the engine at normal idle.  I shut it off and looked things over.  I had no trouble lights.  The bike restarted normally and ran normally home.  I took it to the dealer who checked for fault codes, found none.  He put the bike on the dyno and attempted to simulate the fault; nothing happened.  Don't know what all they checked but it hasn't happened again.  Go figure!! :-\
