Running really hot
« on: May 28, 2010, 11:14:00 PM »

I rode my bike home from the dealer today and checked the oil temp (from the lighted dip stick thing) and it read 273  :nervous:. I had them install the X pipe from Steve. It was 83 degrees here today and I rode the freeway home (70mph). So tonight when the weather got down to 75 I took it for a short 20 minute ride never went above 60 mph and when I checked the temp again it was reading 237. Anyone have any ideas why it would run so hot? I'm suppose to go on a ride tomorrow and I am a little nervous about the temps.

Thanks

I don't want to sound like the service guy at the dealership, but that's the normal operating range for oil.

A good syn oil will be good till 300* but it does break down after that and some think sooner. That dip stick temp may be wrong also. I had one that was off 20*.  Doc

Did the gauge run hotter or colder?

Any hotter then 237F I would consider a oil cooler.

The bike already has one.

Per H-D, normal oil temperature for a Twin Cam is 230°F.  If I remember correctly, that's at something like 68° ambient air temperature.  Higher ambient air temps will increase the oil temp, as will heavy loads, high speeds, etc.  It's not uncommon at all to see 260° oil temps; that's one good reason to use a full synthetic motor oil in any Harley.  If you see 300° on a steady basis, I'd shorten the oil change interval and look into perhaps a bigger and better oil cooler.

Above 200* it would read hotter than the meat probe I check it with and the meat probe was spot on the money. The indash gauge I have now is spot on.  Doc
