volt meter
« on: April 07, 2013, 10:25:02 AM »

I have a 2013 CVO ULTRA and I haven't even taken it for a ride yet because of weather and salt on the roads but when I start it up I notice the volt meter reads 16 volts which is at the end of the meter. This doesn't seem right to me but was wondering if anyone could let me know if this is normal or should I be making a trip to the dealership? All info is appreciated. Thanks.

The real voltage shouldn't exceed about 14.7 volts, but you will need to use a decent quality volt meter to check it, not the cheap POS mounted in the fairing.  If you have a DVOM set it to DC volts and attach the leads to the battery terminals.  You can use the battery tender pigtail if you have one so you don't have to remove the seat.  If you actually get a 16 volt reading with a good gauge, something isn't right and you should have the dealer take care of it ASAP.  If you just have a worse than normal gauge, ask them to replace it but don't be surprised if they just tell you they all do that.  Some dealership personnel seem to have that phrase tattooed on the inside of their eyelids so they can call it up regardless of the situation.

best to buy a low amp charger and keep it on when the bike is not in use.

I do have a battery tender but I will check the voltage with a tester.

I just checked, and the fairing gauge on mine reads high as well.  This is what I found using my Fluke DMM:
Motor running = 14.30vdc
Bike off, ignition switch on = 12.67vdc
Bike off, ignition switch off = 13.06vdc

Your readings should be somewhere in those ranges.  Like Jerry said, if your voltages are what the fairing gauge says, get it fixed asap before something cooks!

Well tested the voltage with a tester and it was reading 14.37 volts with the motor running. Tested the battery with the ignition off and it was a little over 13 volts , about where it should be. The guage does read high.... must have been made in China.

I went through the same thing with my bike when I first got it. The dealer told me it was normal for the volt meter to peg when I revved the motor (imagine that) and I wasn't comfortable with that answer so I checked it myself and got numbers real close to those posted above.
