Which Loctite to use and where?
« on: July 10, 2010, 01:56:32 PM »

I looked on the their web site and found 3 different types of Loctite Threadlocker, the Blue 242, Green 290 and Red 271.  This is my first Harley and I don't want any parts to start falling off and wondered if the Blue Loctite works for most items?

When I do my first oil change, should I put Loctite on the drain bolt or let the O-ring do the work?

What is the best torque wrench to get?

I always use the blue if you are going to have to remove at some point.  Red is only used on items you seldom or never remove.  I have never used loctite on drain bolts, let the o ring do its job, just my opinion.

Ditto.  The o-ring will seal just fine.  And do not over tighten the drain plugs - they are steel and the pans are aluminum.  'Nuff said.  Too tight and you'll strip out the aluminum threads.  Finger tight and then snugged up is just fine.  Personally I think the torque values the moco has for the drain plugs are way too much.

I've used only blue, most people in Aus use red.

Use it on everything that is exposed to shaking/rattling etc.

E.g. on a v-twin, just about everything you put on the bike.

Torque wrench!? Dunno they are american, here we use the elbow!

The manual will call for red or blue.  Blue is most common especially if you want to ever take it apart.  There is a green, but that can be applied after as it works it's way in to the threads.
I put a bit of Teflon pipe thread compound on the drain plugs.  There are so many instances of dissimilar metal connection (steel fastener into aluminum hole) that I put either thread locker or anti-seize on almost every bolt.  After a few years, you'll break a few of these trying to get them out.

Buy the HD Service Manual for your bike; it will tell you which, if any, thread locker to use.  As for torque wrenches, lots of choices but you'll need at least 3/8" ft-lbs and in.-lbs torque wrenches and good sets of hex and torx sockets.

For the torque on your bike, the inch pounds wrench will be 1/4" drive.

As to brand, tools are a very competitive business. Snap-On is always at or near the top in price. They are still in business. There must be a reason.
