08 serk questions on reliability and 110 engine
« on: July 18, 2010, 01:02:29 PM »

Hello,
I have made a deal to purchase an 08 SERK anniversary edition. My first Harley....it is a sweet bike!!!! However after gleaning the site I am questioning my decision. Specifically, the issues I have read regarding the 110 engine and and the recall associated with it....and the class action suite (by the way..in the suit FLHRSE is refered to as a RoadGlide...why?...mistake?). Does the recall fix the issues? Are the front rotor warping issues pervasive? How big is the heat issues with this bike and are they easily enough and cheap enough to mitigate (heard remapping would help, bike has Rhienhart exhaust on it).  I love the looks of this bike, but  am looking for some assurance I am not buying into a money pit and lots of headaches with regards to reliability. Please give me your opinions. Thank you.

First thing you should do is to have a dealer check the VIN against H-D records to see if it was included in the "Enhancement" program, since there was a cutoff date on the '08 models.  Bikes built after a certain date already had the "fix" from the factory.  H-D records should show if the enhancement program was required, and if it has already been performed.  If it hasn't, you only have until July 28, 2010 to get it done.  See attached bulletin for details.

Thanks, Yes I did check and the recall was done. Also, discovered that a power commander is on board. Gonna buy it. I look forward to being on board.

There were certainly enough problems for HD to do the 'enhancement' program.  However, my wife has 13,000 miles on her FLHRSE4 with no problems thus far..knock on wood...no enhancement done, as we adopted the 'if it ain't broke don't fix it' philosophy.  I bought mine recently with 3,000 miles on it and the enhancements done by previous owner...I have put another 1500 miles on it with no problems..again, 'knock on wood'..lol.
It just may be a 'crap shoot' on whether or not you will have problems...there are those with lots and lots of miles on theirs with none of the enhancements, and no problems.  Let's hope that yours is one of the good ones!

My 08 CVO RK has been great. Did the recall thing but it wasn't leaking prior. I live in central Texas and I ride it when it is 100 and never had any heat related issues.

man i love mine i installed my 110 kit my self and with all the unhappy posts you see on here i had a gut wrenching feeling in my stomach myself after i had bought and paid for this kit i joined this sight they had a recall and in my mind like anything else it got blown out of perportion i am not saying these motors dont have any issues but just like any other motor it has pistons heads jugs cams and all that other crap to say one engine is crap and another is better when they are both built from the same components is coming from people that most likely dont have a trade or mech ticket themselves ride your bike monitor your noises inspect it frequently check your oil check for leaks check the posting on this sight although dont take everything you read for granted i beet the living hell out of mine have over 15000 km on it i am never easy on it aside from letting it warm up properly and servicing it on schedule no problems yet knock on wood but man if you bought the bike already check it out ensure the recalls have been done take care of her pay attention to her and good luck to you and remember bag em brake em fix em
