Scala Cardo Rider Q2 Multiset won't connect via Voice
« on: May 02, 2010, 05:44:31 PM »

My wife and I bought a Cardo Rider Q2 multi set this winter and are now getting it ready to use but we can't get the voice connect feature working.  The only way we can get them to communicate with each other is by double tapping the MC button--talking won't activate it.  A single tap should work for one of the sets, I believe, but it doesn't.  Once we javascript:void(0);do a double tap it starts working and we can talk to each other but that's the only way--no voice connect.   I even tried turning the VOX on and off to see if that made a difference and it doesn't appear to.
Any suggestions on what to do?  Their website doesn't cover very much in the FAQ part.
TIA,
Steve

Steve-

This will sound crazy, but according to a Webbikeworld review, to use the vox, they had to stand by a running motorcycle (it would not work room to room-too quiet).

I have been doing research on the Q2 and G4 so that's how I found out the above.  Hope this works for you.  Other than that, I have no help.  Bob

We read that in the manual so my wife started up her bike which is fairly loud but that didn't help.  We also tried enableing and un-enableing the VOX and that didn't seem to help either.  I sent an email to Cardo so maybe I'll get a response from them.

tryI would reset all units and create new pairings.

1.             Perform FULL PAIRING RESET (not Intercom Pairing reset) to all Q2’s.

2.             With the Q2 powered on press and hold the control button until the unit begins to flash red and blue.

3.             With the LED flashing red and blue, press and hold the volume up button for 5 seconds until the unit flashes purple and turns off.

4.             You have now reset your unit.

When attempting to pair your Q2 with and additional Q2 you must follow these steps:

1)             Make sure that both Q2’s are powered on.

2)             Press and hold the control button and MC button simultaneously until the headset begins flashing red rapidly. Repeat this process on the 2nd Q2.

3)             Both headsets will flash red until they are connected. After they establish a connection each headset will begin flashing blue.

It is possible to connect up to two headsets to your Q2. To add a 2nd Q2 to your headset repeat this process from the beginning.

When attempting to pair the Q2 headset with a Bluetooth enabled phone the GPS must support the ability to pair to Bluetooth headsets. It is necessary to place the headset into pairing mode before trying to discover it with the phone. To do this you must:

1)             Make sure the Q2 is powered on.

2)             Press and hold the control button until the headset flashes Red and Blue.

3)             Now search for a Bluetooth enabled headset from the Phone or GPS system you are pairing the Q-2 with.

4)             After your device finds the Q2 you will be prompted to enter a passkey. The passkey for the Q2 is (0000).

Please feel free to contact us if we can assist with any other questions.

Best regards,

Robert Wargo

Robert,  I'll try that when I get some time today and report back if that worked or not.
Thanks,

On my set we do have to start the vox with a "HEY", loud enough to open up the circuit.

Robert:
Well we finally got time to try out what you suggested and try the headsets on a trip.  After resetting them we can get them to connect, use the bluetooth cell phone and get guidance from the GPS I have.  Our main problem now is that the intercom turns it's self on while we're riding but not talking and there is a little static in it all that time so it's kind of annoying.  We haven't been able to figure out what turns it on but I can turn it off by tapping the MC button but a few seconds later it comes back on with the static.  If it's in the standby mode (which it isn't very often) we sometimes can't get it to connect by speaking, only by tapping the MC button.  I haven't tried disabling the talk to connect feature yet and using only the MC button, so I don't know if that will solve the problem.  Also can't figure out where the static comes from.  I have HID lights on the bike but I've even turned them off and the static doesn't go away. Also turned off the GPS (Zumo 550) and that doesn't help, so I don't know why we're getting the static.  My bike isn't that loud but my wife's has fairly loud pipes on it---maybe that is why it keeps opening the talk circuit--we just can't figure it out.  Right now the system seems nice to use but certainly not for $3-400, maybe it would be nice at $100, but not what we paid for it.  I guess I'm thinking for that much money it ought to work better than it does.  One other point is that it seems we only get audio out of the left speaker and nothing out of the right speaker---in both helmets.
Any suggestions on what to try next?

What kind of helmets are you using?
If not full face then it is probably wind that is opening the VOX. Even with my full face, if I don't have the mic tucked up inside the wind will turn it on.
How bad is the static? Is it really static or just white noise because the comm circuit is open. On my mine, when not talking I can hear some noise, but to me it just sounds like "open mic" noise.

Your pipe should not open up the VOX. I have No one I have ever talked to over the phone had any idea I was on a bike, the noise canceling is pretty good.

I would call Cardo tech, it sounds like you have a problem. I have the first generation of the 2 up kit and am pleased with the performance. Not as clear good as hardwired, but there are no wires to deal with.

Guess I need to call their tech support sometime.  We both have 3/4 helmets with face shields but my shield is only a half shield while my wife's is a full shield.  My mike catches some air but it didn't seem to change when I tucked it up under the shield.  Maybe the wind is causing it.  The "static" I hear could be the noise you were talking about rather than static as it sounds like just some background noise while the VOX is active but it gets kind of annoying when it never ends-except when the GPS cuts in to tell me something.  Just wearing the helmets around the house and trying them they seem to work correctly, so maybe it is wind causing it.  Maybe I expect too much sometimes.

I believe there is a different windsock available for using 3/4 helmets.
I am pretty sure that is the issue you are having (wind activating the VOX)
