I was riding thru Rockford today returning home from an errand on a pretty wide open four lane road - speed limit 45mph. As there are very few businesses and no homes that face this particular road, the traffic typically moves 55 to 60 mph - it's been that way for years. There are stoplights every 3 or so miles. As I was in no particular hurry, it is a great weather day, and traffic was fairly light (no one riding my backside) I was only riding 45 mph. But everyone around me was traveling the typical 55 to 60 mph. I had just noticed a squad car sitting on a side road with radar pointing out his window. I smiled to myself knowing that I was doing the speed limit - admittedly, I usually don't on this road. I then came over a rise in the road to see about 6 squad cars along the side of the road - and a long string of orange cones. There were already about 5 or 6 cars sitting behind the cones with officers leaning in the windows. An officer was standing about 4 feet into the right lane, motioning everyone to pull in behind the cones, inlcuding me - he pointed right at me. Obviously a bunch of speeding tickets were being handed out. As I was not speeding, I figured I'd take a chance and chose to continue riding right past them. As I appproached the end of the line of cones, another officer stepped out into the right lane, eyeballed me and pointed at me. I gave him "4" fingers, then "5" fingers (45 mph) then a thumbs up. He gave me a look, then smiled and gave me a thumbs up back. And I continued on my way home...
