Motor seems to go into parade mode too often
« on: October 31, 2010, 10:44:50 AM »

I have this concern that the dealer is writing off as normal, not sure if I agree. I have V&H Power duels with high output mufflers, SERT, and it's been set up by the dealer. The bike runs great, it just seems to go into parade mode too soon and often. The ambient temperature yesterday was 10c or 52f, and within 15 minutes of normal stop and go riding it was going into parade mode. Any ideas?

You get the same response from your dealer that I always get from mine. If they do not know, they just tell you that is normal. Well, I must have the bike with the problem, because mine very rarely goes into parade mode. It has to me in the nineties and sitting in traffic before mine goes into parade mode. In Colorado, where I live, it has not been in parade mode more than a dozen times this past year. I have 13,000 miles on my 2010 SEUC, and it did go into parade mode quite a bit on my trip to Key West Florida this past June, but that was to be expected in that kind of heat. I have the SERT with Fullsac X-pipe and baffles, set up by dealer. I have no heat issues with this bike. Wish I could say the same about the other issues that it has.

I understand the reason for the rear cylinder shutting down, but what tells it to shut down? I know the computer shuts it down, but what tells the  computer to shut it down? There must be a sensor somewhere, and I would then think it could be sending a false reading to the computer and it's shutting the rear cylinder down prematurely.
Thinking out loud here.

The ECM receives the cylinder head temperature input from a sensor (ET) screwed into the front cylinder head (on the left side near the horn).  The dealer should be able to test that sensor and make sure it is accurate.

Your original post mentioned that the SERT was "set up by the dealer".  How did they "set it up", with a full dyno tune or did they just install one of the canned maps from H-D?  Did they change the closed loop settings, or is the bike still running the stock 14.7:1 ratio in closed loop?  If you are still running lean in closed loop and at idle, and your stop and go traffic is more stop than go, there is no doubt why your EITMS is shutting down the rear cylinder at every light.

Jerry is giving good advice...  Either the cylinder head temperature sensor is not reading accurately or your bike is running lean.  Odds are you're running lean...

I probably put too much trust in the dealer mechanics, the bike has never had a dyno tune so I would assume they set it up with one of the canned maps. I used to know how to set up my Harley when it was carberated now with all the computers and fuel injection it's over my head. Thats where I must trust the mechanic to set it up, unless of coarse I can be taught how to set it up.

Jerry is correct.

The "canned maps" from Harley via the SERT are set up lean. you should consider going to get a tune or enrichen the idle speed settings yourself.

I hope it works out for you.
