Hey Doc thanks for the input I've read several of your post ,enough to know you know a lot more than me.What gets me is out of four bone stock cvo 110 bikes two 09 and two 2010's all have have the exact same mods TTS,2" baffles open head pipes(X pipe,V&H Pwr Duels)the 2010's never kick back when starting but the 09 SERG'S make a horrible clank most every time.I was told by a HD Tech at our local dealer that the noise is coming from the front compensator sprocket over running the primary when the engine fires and spins faster than the starter is turning the ring gear.Does this sound right and is the compensator sprocket different on a 2009 than a 2010?I really fear another ring gear/clutch basket failure next month on our trip to Sturgis and that could really be a bad deal as far as we have to go and as many times as you have to grit your teeth when you push that little button. The last time it failed the starter completly lock up on the broken ring gear tooth and had to be trailered. Help,Thanks Mike

Clunking or clanking can be caused by a weak compensator, and in fact it was quite common on the early 110's.  Initially H-D pulled it's infamous "that's normal" BS response, just like they did with the other noises they created when they redesigned the primary and the trans for '07.  Funny thing though, less than a year after the 110 was introduced there was a new SE compensator added to the catalog that had increased travel and spring pressure, just what you need on a larger displacement engine with high cranking pressures.  Eventually they made the higher capacity compensator standard equipment on the Trikes and the 2010 CVO engines.  That's probably why you don't hear the clunking on your 2010's but you do hear it on the 2009's.

I assume your 2009's are still in warranty, since they can't be two years old yet, so why not have that Harley dealership fix this under warranty?  Several folks have mentioned getting Harley to upgrade the compensator while doing starter repairs; worth a shot.

Looking at all the replys here I would have to say all possibilities have been covered....at least I can't see anything else being a cause.

did you ever add the SE compensator to your bike? Did it help?

Thanks, FAST
