Odd noise when shutting off bike
« on: September 18, 2010, 03:06:54 PM »

Anyone get a clunking noise when shuttting off bike with ignition switch. Doesn't happen with handlebar kill switch. Can't tell if it is bike blowing off excess fuel through left exhaust pipe of if it is compensator nut or possibly just rear sprocket spinning slightly. More annoying than a concern, just curious

mine does it...... every time....... i never use the kill switch cuz TTS says not to as it will cause the idle to change over time i think...

I'm having a hard time envisioning why the engine would care if you shut the bike down with the kill switch or the ignition switch.   :confused5:

While the engine is running, it tends to load the mounts slightly even at idle.  When you shut it off, the load is eliminated and things tend to move slightly.  If you have a mechanical clunk, try watching at each mount while someone shuts the bike down to see if you can observe any movement that could result in your noise.  Check for looseness where the stabilizer links attach to the frame and the engine, and where the link brackets attach to the engine and frame.  Don't forget the exhaust system.  If you eliminate all the external possibilities, it's probably just a little backlash internally on that last compression stroke which could make the compensator or other parts give you a little clunk.  Since so many seem to have the exact same thing, it will most likely be one of those "normal" things from the all time leader in "they all do that", Harley-Davidson.  If it doesn't blow up, it's good.

Jerry,

The engine doesn't care how you shut it off, but the ECM does. In the "Old Days" they used to say to use the cut off switch because it was faster and the rider kept both hands on the bars. But on the new bikes with the electronic throttle FBW, it really does have a lot to do with idle. Somehow the ECM "Remembers" the last idle it was as and "sets" itself accordingly. That's why they want the rider to wait for the bike to idle down before shutting it off. If you cut the bile off while rolling, decellerating or blipping the throttle like we used to with carbed bikes, the ECM may have a tendency to idle higher the next time you start it up. Then you have to do a special kind of reset thing with the throttle and ignition switch.

But what do I know,.....my bike has throttle cables.

I understand that part about the ETC Mark.  Not using the kill switch forces you to take your hand off the grip so you can't affect the idle position which the ECM checks and resets during shutdown.  The part I don't understand is why shutting it down with the ignition switch would cause a clunk, but shutting down with the kill switch doesn't cause a clunk.  Unless, of course, people are hearing the ignition switch itself make a noise (which they do when you turn them past a detent).  The engine and driveline shouldn't care how the spark gets killed; ignition switch, kill switch, pull the fuse, cut the battery cable, whatever. :nixweiss:
