Fix For Factory Fender Hole
« on: October 29, 2010, 01:38:54 PM »

I know this has been discussed before but don't remember the outcome......  I found a decent fix for the wiring pass-thru hole in my SERG rear fender at a radiator shop, an oblong rubber grommet used to secure the radiator in my brother's Mazda pickup.  Simply remove the inner brass spacer & cut the rubber to fit around the wiring then insert it in the hole.  It even has a groove to hold it in place.  Any radiator shop will give you one (at least here in Alabama - heck he's probably your cousin).  I'm attaching photos, the whole process took maybe one minute.

Tried & tried to add pics of the rubber grommet to fill the fender hole  -  just can't make it work. Go by a radiator shop & ask about the insulating rubber grommet for a Mazda pickup, you'll understand as soon as you see it, its almost a perfect fit.

I thought about using some RTV silicone in the grommet outer groove to make it fit tighter but haven't done that yet.  You could even fill the inner space around the wire but would have to do some carefull cutting if you ever needed to remove the fender.  I guess it depends on how tight you want the seal to be & how much trouble you're willing to go through if you want to remove it.

Sounds like your pictures may be too big.  Try reducing the size of them (less than 2200 Kb) then re-upload.

I guess I've never looked at my rear fender close enough...

What's the object, to protect the harness from cutting through or to keep out the crud?

The grommet is mostly a crud-keeper-outer.  There were no worn wiring issues on my 67,000 mile SERG.

That's what I have done but Rimjam's grommet loks good.  Definitely keeps the area under the seat cleaner.  Grommet should be installed from the factory.     >:(
